Electric cars still depend on electricity from the burning of fossil fuels (mostly coal fired plants) to charge their batteries. Then you still have to factor in the energy expended in the mining of the material used in the production of the batteries and the impact that mining has on the environment and so forth.

Plus there is no way the electric grid in this country can handle the switch over, they already cannot handle everyone running the AC or the Furnace during really hot or really cold spells. Suddenly having 100 million vehicles plugged in is not going to make the situation any better.

You need to get out more. These things are arriving, in small batch form, already. I don’t know how old you are, but you will live to see the electric Taco, and it will be a better, more capable, and more reliable vehicle than would be possible with an over-complicated, poor performing tech, like a gas motor.

    Second Gen: 1990 - 1995 (5 years)
    Third Gen: 1996 - 2002 (6 years)
    Fourth Gen: 2003 - 2009 (6 years)
    Fifth Gen: 2010 - 2020 (10+ years)

    Tundra
First Gen: 2000 - 2006 (6 years, but arguably draws its roots to 1992 T100)
    Second Gen: 2006 - 2020 (14+ years)

    Tacoma
    First Gen: 1995 - 2004 (9 years)
    Second Gen: 2005 - 2015 (10 years)
Third Gen: 2016 ~ 2027 (Expect 11 years because Toyota updates vehicles less and less frequently)

    Conclusion
There's no way the Fourth Gen Tacoma is coming out in 2022. We'll get a new Tundra by then. The Tacoma will run for at least 10 years through at least 2026. Tundra's platform will be used for the Fourth Gen Tacoma in the latter half of the 2020s.

I'm a millennial, lol. I have nothing against the concept of electric vehicles, I just don't think the current state of battery technology is compelling enough to replace ICE. I have no doubt the tech will improve, and eventually electric cars will be superior to ICE cars in every way.

    But we're not there yet.

Can you imagine a day when solar energy and regenerative power are so advanced, we would be able to go on long off-road Trips without ever needing fuel, or needing to stop to recharge. And still store enough energy to power accessory’s. I can’t say I prefer electric cars over gas, but the possibilities are undeniably cool. That’ll possibly be for a different generations time though.

There are some reasons to not buy electric vehicles, especially for us truck owners. However the grid is not one of them.

We are already there at Pikes Peak. Gassers are out forever on that. No point even trying. It’s suspected 1/4 Mile “top fuel” drag time record will fall to electric this year, and a Tesla SUV already beats a Lamborghini on the strip.

Absolutely insane energy stored onboard the VW. Holy shit.

I would agree with you but you have the remember that the 3rd generation is simply a heavily refreshed 2nd generation truck that debuted in 2005.5. I believe the cab shell and rear doors haven’t changed. The drivetrain was only the major change to the 2016 model. Toyota changed up the metal stamping dies for the front fenders, hood, bedsides, tail gate and they slightly revised the front doors. If you go by my thinking the Tacoma will be around 16 years old by 2022.

Its funny how badly the lambo starts pulling on it near the end, I've seen a lot of tesla race vids and they blow their load real quick in terms of speed. Not saying they aren't "quick" but there's better examples, like the rimac, that can actually keep its speed going.

Electric cars have been around for over 100 years and the problem is not the motor itself, it's the low energy density and charging times of every battery technology currently available.

    800px-Energy_density.svg.png

There is nothing in those articles to indicate that the electrical grid/distribution infrastructure could take a large portion of cars switching from gas to battery powered at the present.

Edit: Another sticking point for battery powered cars, how much battery capacity will those of you who live through cold winters lose when the temperature is below the freezing point?

My cell phone battery barely stays charged for one day.

I love the simplicity of an all electric automobile like the Tesla Model S but l predict the laptop batteries currently being used will be obsolete in the next 10 years. It going to take a battery breakthrough for electric cars to really take off and kill off ICE powered cars and trucks. And we haven’t even addressed the aging electric infrastructure in this country.
