Is it really that hard to open a tailgate and use yourself to not let it drop?

Also noticed that in both of those vids the tailgate cables are not taught and it looks like the tailgate is not all the way open.

It's not that hard at all, it's the same reason as all my other mods, cause I can.
My tailgate goes all the way down, I think it's the angle of the video.
I'm guessing all the mods you have done to your truck are purely functional and not for looks and not just because, to each his own.

I have one of the steel replacement/reinforcement caps on mine that makes it quite a bit heavier. If I have to open it one handed it does take a little bit of effort/technique to not have it come crashing down.

Bigger motivation for me is I have had my friends, my GF, and a guy at the tire store all drop it and then exclaim "oh wow that was kinda heavy" while I cringe.

I have a full relentless fab steel skin as well... but i dont let others touch the truck.... and GF knows its heavy. I just see this as more moving parts to go wrong... but thats just me.

Fair enough. I feel the failure mode is pretty harmless/won't ruin my day vs. say electric windows or hood struts.

One aspect I am looking forward to is when I am camping - I have a wedge camper and opening the heavy tailgate from the inside takes even more care to lower it gently.

They are all factory 3rd gen parts so I'm sure they will last quite some time

3rd gen is already on its second iteration due to cracking of the unit.

I get this for that reason then.... makes sense, relentless skin would likely catapult you out of the truck without it haha.

You are correct, the first version was changed in feb 2006 because the bushing was to thin, it's been the same since then with no issues,
Are you just looking to argue or are you concerned because you want to buy the kit?
Either way, I'm here for you my friend

Tundra's had it since 07. Mine is just fine.

It's a great mod for those that don't have it.

There is, the full kit is 280 plus 9.90 shipping
Partial kit is 100 plus 6.90 shipping
The partial kit does not include the dampener or the dampener bracket, you may be able to source them cheaper than I can get them (almost 100 each at my dealer)
I was able to source mine from a local wrecking yard for 40 bucks for both.
Just make sure it is the later version (mid year 2016 to 2019) the very first ones were a different size and prone to breaking.
Any questions feel free to ask

Thank you. I'm interested. I'll have to add this one to the mod list.

Try opening your tail gate with 1 hand, while the other is loaded with an arm load of fire wood.

Try it after the mod. You will be convinced of its' validity.
