I had considered upgrading the speakers but was advised to just change out the head unit. Happy I did. Moved to the Pioneer AVH W4400NEX. Pleased so far. Plenty loud, crisp, and brings out the low end in the stock speakers.

    Apple CarPlay is nice too.

I've installed new door speakers so far and wired it all up to an amp but it's on zeor gain, no amplification yet. I'm waiting until I figure out the soldering situation on my tweeters. Then I'll use the amp and then hook up the subs (also installed, not powered).

But the stock system sounds a lot better with just the door speaker upgrades, almost too much bass but once I swap the stock tweeters out that'll be fixed.
Than I'll start using the amp and be really impressed.

scored some deals on focal not the high end ones recently from Crutchfield. Great change indeed for the price. About $250 shipped. Def need to boost the power but its pretty nice out of the gate even on the stock unit. New HU on order so well see whats next.

I changed out the Tweeters, but not the door speakers. Added a 8'' powered underseat Sub, and it sounds fantastic. I am more than content now.

Could not agree with you more, OP. I have the non-JBL large screen head unit, and replaced all speakers. Subaru Tweets, and Kicker for the other 4. The difference in sound was astonishing to me.

I just took all my stock speakers out too. I put Kenwood Excelon component system up front and JL Audio C1-650 Component speakers in the rear doors. I also added the JL Stealthbox and JL jx500 mono amp pushing the sub. The component speakers are running of the stock head unit and they sound killer. BTW that JL amp will fit under the passenger side seat.

I'm thinking of getting a Sony headunit -the 210, and only b/c I'm getting tired of the Bluetooth skipping issue with the stock headunit and I know if I take it in the dealer is going to tell me to F- off. I was contemplating a speaker upgrade myself, good to hear about this mod.

None yet - It’s my father in laws truck
It’s my father-in-laws truck, so unlikely I’ll upgrade that for him anytime soon, but I was surprised to see the Subaru tweeters were $100 on Amazon. I can get a decent set of components for a little more.
