Solid Axle Conversion

Seems to be uncommon with the 3rd Gen. I seen it with 1st and 2nd but not with third.

Is it because 3rd gen owners don't care?

Waste of money. You would be better off getting a mini truck for rock crawling. Most 3rd gen guys do more mild trails. IF you want to REALLY crawl, you could get an earlier toyota like a minitruck (1980s pickup) or firstgen 4runner, fj40, or firstgen tacoma and then SAS it and get you some low range gearing and lockers. The 3rd gen is wide, long, and expensive

 

3rd gen owners don't go off road, so no need for sas

The trucks are newer and the axles are getting older. That would be the way to go for ruggedness and articulation though.

 

FJ80 front axle would be the ticket if you wanted to keep it toyota. They are super easy to rebuild from the worst conditions. Or Dana 44 for stock length rear, or you could go D60, but would have to do the rear to match

I'll have my 3rd Gen paid off in about 5 months and would consider building it out. Still waiting to see what the RCLT is capable of before looking at SAS options. Either way, the rear is getting done right. Also want to regear but won't do that until I know exactly what the build looks like.

I think you see a lot of the older ones because the trucks are just that, older. so can be had cheaper.

Its kind of hard for someone to buy a 35k+ truck to throw another 15-20k at it doing a SAS to build a rock crawler.
Besides a lot of people do LT and you can haul ass with it instead.

Guess it just depends where you wheel.
And with all the shit Marlin Crawler is doing they're trying to make it where IFS can rock crawl just as good as solid.

 

Dont SAS your thirdgen. For the same money youll spend on a SAS on a thirdgen you can get a trail truck and drive to work in comfort in your 3rdgen. Here is my trail truck, paid what it would cost to SAS a third gen. You could dump 30K into a 3rd gen and I would still smoke you in the rocks...





Fully built trussed axle housings with front and rear chromo shafts, ARB Front, Detroit rear lockers, Orion low range T case. Armor. Warn 8274. Hydro assist. Axle stretch. Etc. Your standard yota crawler stuff

Not crawler trucks. Restorations sell for crazy amounts but ones that have been built into crAwlers can’t bring the same amount

This owner doesn’t give a shit about BS SAS. Fully independent is fucking titties for higher speed off road applications. That’s why I bought a Tacoma and not some dumb shit Jeep.

 

Firstly, yes we do offroad. Secondly I considered this but it’s a passenger drop and we need a driver drop. A Dana 60 swap is cheaper, stronger, and easier to build for the 3rd gen.
