Anyone know if it would hurt to leave the key in the ignition of my 2019 off road manual when parked in the garage? My garage is secure, but would it drain the car or key battery?

I used to do this with my Silverado truck and never had a problem and I had it for 13 years, parked in the garage of course. My new Tacoma has the push button start so I won't have those problems anymore.

I really dunno the answer to this...but what I do hear is my fuel pump come to life simply by inserting the key. Not even turning.

Out of curiosity; why would you want to do this?

I’ve never had an issue between two different gens. I stopped leaving the fob in the push to start cars since its supposed to drain the battery in the remote, but that’s probably just an urban legend.

Only thing I could add is: Do you have a lot of weight on your key-ring? Heavy key-rings can damage the tumblers of a key-set over time. Leaving them in the socket may speed up this process.

white lithium will help worn tumblers. chances are it would be beneficial for good tumblers also.

Good Call. But I've seen others with damaged key-sockets beyond what grease can fix. Reported cause was to much stuff hanging on the key-ring.

Smart key is bad, it will kill the battery quickly.

    Regular key, no issues.

    Actually, it's true.

But, you can deactivate the Toyota key fob: hold down the lock button, and press the unlock button twice. If you did it right, you'll see the red led blink 4 times (blinks twice, x2). To reactivate, press any button.

It's true. My wife used to leave her fob in her RAV4 all the time until it killed the battery the other day and she had to get her friend to come give her a jump. She called Toyota and the person she spoke with told her that it'll drain the battery if she keeps it in her car all the time.

Just an FYI, people have died because of this. They get in the habit of leaving their keys in the ignition, and one day forget to shut the vehicle off. Then, they go to bed and dont wake up.

The idea is to pull into the garage, turn off the truck, leaving the key in the ignition, get out of the truck, close the garage door and go into my house.

Thanks for being concerned, but I'm not too worried about forgetting to turn off my truck and poisoning myself. I'm somehow capable of getting out of my truck multiple times a day without forgetting to turn it off even once. Geeze!

Since I'll be back in the truck first thing in the morning, is there any reason to take the key out of the truck. It is the only key I carry, and the fact that i have to carry a key is the only thing that i hate about the truck. It is not a keyless fob, although it does have a battery. Manuals dont use the fob. My previous car had a fob and a push button start. Feel like I'm back in the stone age.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
When I lived on a military base my keys were always in the floorboard. Home, parked outside. At work, wherever. I still do it On the weekend and it drives my wife crazy!

No problems other than it being a security risk. The BCM will shut down and there won’t be any kinda of current draw in the truck. A smart key will keep a keyless module awake and it can kill the battery overtime. Nothing you have to worry about.

I left my valet key in my Hondas ignition for about 10 years, never had an issue. Same situation as you, parked my manual car in the garage and I work on a military base, not real worried about my car getting stolen. I only had the key itself and a small keychain that weighed hardly anything, I had a separate keyring with work keys and a spare on it.

Do you live in a neighborhood with children? Is the garage always closed when you aren't right there at the truck?
