Are rust worries valid on used 2016?

Unfortunately, I need to retire my 1998 Tacoma. ☹️ I found a 2016 access cab, off-road for sale in California. However, Carfax says the truck was originally purchased and came from Pennsylvania. Looks like it was a leased truck and regularly serviced, which is good to see. Should I be concerned about potential future rust issues? I’m a westerner now and haven’t had to think about rust since I was a kid in the Midwest!

Always want to check but its not going to have the severe rust you see on 1995-2011 models.

Its going to have standard surface rust on the diffs and spotted rust on the welds on the frame.

How does emissions work with a truck from out of state? Or is it by region.

The Carfax shows that it passed emissions in CA.

I met someone a few weeks ago that said Toyota gave her $11k for her 1st gen because of rust. So, perhaps if there are rust issues, they will continue to be awesome at supporting their customers?

Toyota did a buy back on some 1st generation Tacoma’s. As the problem grew they started offering frame replacements. The problem grew to the second generation Tacoma’s. A lot of owners have got screwed out of a frame replacement due to the time constraints. Now they problem has made its way to the 3rd gen trucks. Toyota claiming some 16-17’s are effected. They are only offering extended frame warranty coverage if you take the truck in to get the frame coated by the dealer within a certain time frame.

Not if you take care of your frame. There are no “rusted out” 3rd gens.

Anyone with a 3 gen that broke in half, please post pics.

Take a look at this truck. I'd guess that the rust prognosis mostly depends on where the truck resides going forward. Vehicles in the east and midwest rust much faster than vehicles in the west. If the truck you're looking at from PA is rust free or has only a little surface rust, it's unlikely you'll have any major rust problems in CA. At least not for a long time.

I've had a few experiences with east coast vehicles getting moved west. In 2003 I brought an east coast 1990 Toyota pickup with some minor rust out west. Interestingly the rust process seemed to stop in place. To this day it has about the same amount of rust that it did in 2003.

My 2016 has spent its whole life in Ohio, new Hampshire and PA, I've never done anytime of frame coating but I've pressure washed it regularly and the frame looks fine. If the truck your looking at no longer resides in the northeast I really wouldn't worry about it. It takes more than a couple years of neglect to trust out a frame.

Have you borescoped the inside of the frame? Other than casual surface rust, the holes start from the inside out. It's why one inspection process is hitting it with a hammer. Even on what looks good.

But was is serviced primarily in PA or CA?
If it's life has spent kost of it's life in PA- compared to CA, it's got decades worth of rain, road salt, and chemicals.
Any vehicle can and will rust, just depends on where it's used and how it's cared for.
As @Clearwater Bill said, take it to a good tech, they'll have a small camera, they can run INSIDE the frame rails.

Please explain how a 2016 truck has "got decades worth of rain, road salt, and chemicals" on it...? o_O

Theres like one or two things on this forum that people are over sensitive too, and rust is one of them..

My 2016 has 2 winters of Ontarible salt and brine on it and looks ok. Short of bore-scoping it to know for sure... i did however have it rustproofed at 19000km when i got it from out west ! See what i did there - shot reverse shot. Happy Friday !

I have not bore scoped it but I've done plenty of snooping around it. I've owned multiple toyotas and both my brothers and my dad drive tacomas and in my experience with even zero to marginal maintenance in take at least a decade of life in the northeast to "rust out". Surface rust is almost instantaneous though.

The ac dripping on the frame isn’t going to cause much if any added rust. It’s not like it salt water dripping out of the line. If anything it’s helping flush that area of containment’s and any salt

My comment still stands though, unless the truck was put through some sort of accelerated salt spray test, I dont see how it would accumulate decades of salt in a few years.. :notsure:
