Plumbing is hard on the body. Back and knees mostly. Also multiple schools and certifications needed to get max pay. I hate doing plumbing work. Need to be a contortionist to do half the work and you almost always end up wet and usually with icky water!

Older thread, but good information here. If it wasn’t for this thread I wouldn’t have looked up my local IBEW. Excited to look into a new career as an electrician as well and the first steps that need to be taken. To all who commented, very good information.

Lol. So metal fabrication, like welding?
I’ve heard welders make good money, I’ve considered it. Seems fun but then I picture lung cancer lol.

Everything causes cancer. There aren’t too many jobs that you could get that wouldn’t have some types of exposure to something that cause cancer in a trade job

I suppose that’s true, just seems like you’re constantly breathing in fumes all day. Not knocking on it, I’d actually love to learn how to weld as a hobby or heck maybe even a side job. Do people have respirators for welding?

Those undersea welders are hardcore mofos. One of my friends did it for a few years and said he was terrified every time he went down. Always in dark, murky water, usually near 0 vis.

You don’t know what you want to do, do you?

Don’t just go after a job for money. Find something you enjoy it at the least don’t mind doing. Any job in a trade, make sure you like working with your hands and don’t mind breaking a sweat or getting a little dirty. If your just thing to go after something for the money, you might end up down a road you wish you didn’t travel.

That being said I don’t know what actual welders in a welding company or anything make. The welders in my union plant make around 30-31 an hour.

I would stay away from any job with “driver” in its title. Industry is working fast and furious to replace drivers with automation. So truck drivers, cab drivers (to include UBER), bus drivers, pizza delivery, etc have a limited future. This will take a minimum of another 10 - 15 years but its the future.

Everything is being replaced by automation. Most plant jobs are being or will be eliminated due to automation. I haven’t any idea what humans will be doing in the future. There won’t be enough job vs the population.

I would recommend looking into manufacturing. Industrial maintenance, electrical and mechanical are great opportunities.
Instrumentation/PLC/Controls/Automation technicians are very high in demand. If there is question on what to do with automation, it’s learn to work on it and with it.
