Did I really need front brakes that Toyota recommended?

New to me truck, figured I’d take it to Toyota just to make sure everything is up to par and for their time I’d let them change my oil. Guy came back and said I needed front brakes which I didn’t get quoted and a front and rear differential service at $450. Pulled my brakes off to change and to my minimum mechanics knowledge it appears that my brakes were near 50% ( top is new pad, bottom is old pad) and I wasn’t in need of brakes? Also read that most guys are just running 75w -90 gear oil which is much cheaper than what Toyota charges for their specific gear oil and serves the same purpose.

Those look fine. I might be a little concerned about them wearing unevenly, but maybe it's just the angle of the picture.

    I figured as much.
I edited the post but the top pad is the new one I bought to replace the pad that’s on the bottom. I was comparing new and old. I replaced the rotors too.

Which is why I’m happy I had the ability to tackle this myself. It really is a shame that they would try and pull something like this... I should of returned the supplies I bought but was already in the motion and said screw it.

They look good to me. I wouldn't even think about replacing them if they looked that good.

My $$$ say the dealer would charge you for the $50 a qt. Toyota Gear Oil and use Mobil-1 at 1/3 that cost.

They pulled the same worn brake pad crap on me when I had a vehicle in for a recall.

It's no mystery why so many people hate car dealership service departments. Dishonesty is a way of life in these places.

I definitely understand it’s how they make money but come onnnnn! Not my first time with issues at the dealer. I need to find a good shop that knows these trucks in the Sarasota area that can tackle projects I can’t.

I went to advance auto and bought valvoline full synthetic 70w-90 with the limited slip. Much cheaper than dealers quote.

looks like just another "stealership" rip off, that's what they do. Exactly why after the warranty is gone, find somewhere else to get your work done.

Also I got 113k miles out of original brake pads. And I'm tough on my brakes.

As everyone has said, brakes look fine and didn't need to be changed.

75W-90 is good to go in both diffs, xfer case, and (if you have a MT) the tranny.

I changed my front pads at 206,000 and the rears at 210,000 miles... but most of my mileage is interstate miles and I am very easy on the brakes.

I would have put those pads back on and returned the new ones...
