Has anyone had to replace the clutch in a manual transmission third gen yet? Dealership just told me mine must be worn down to explain the slipping I just started getting yesterday. It only has 26K miles on it so I'm dumbfounded that a brand new clutch would go that quickly. They said master cylinder seems to be working fine so must be clutch plate or possibly fly wheel but won't know for sure until I pay $1300 in labor to tear down the transmission to find out for sure.

26k is way too few miles for a clutch to be slipping already, unless it's been abused or driven incorrectly. If not then there's gotta be something wrong with the clutch itself or the pressure plate

Unfortunately since the clutch is a wear item it's going to be very difficult to prove to a dealership that it wasn't user error (even if it wasn't), they are always quick to jump to that conclusion.

If they do say it needs replaced and won't cover it under warranty, take it to an independent transmission shop. It will be 3x cheaper. My Toyota dealership wanted $3k to do a clutch on my 1st gen. Was about $1k at a local trans shop.

    $1300 to R&R a transmission? That's ****ing crazy.

Probably because they're going to have to drop the trans to inspect the clutch, good deal of time and labor involved in that. Still sounds high though but that's a dealership for ya.

If he has them do that then he might as well just pay to have the clutch put in too, since clutch parts are relatively cheap. The labor is what kills it on that job

Anyone have the book? What's the time for this? I can't imagine it's more than 6 hours for the R&R... the clutch itself would add, what, maybe $400 ($600 for OEM) and an hour?

Yeah I'm still hoping that once they get the trans pulled and torn down, they'll find something that explains this. If so they might be and to use warranty to pay for it, so I need a dealership to do it as a private shop can't use my warranty to pay. And if by some insane method, I was able to kill my brand new clutch in 25K miles (I've been driving stick for over 15 years), there's no way in hell I'm keeping this truck because I'm not replacing the clutch every two years. So I'd feel better if the dealership does the clutch replacement so it's all done by Toyota on file etc.
It doesn't make sense to me at all but I have nothing else to go on until they pull the trans and check the clutch wheel. I'm extremely angry and depressed by all this, but I feel like I have no control over any of it.

There have been a few instances of a 3rd gen clutch going out before 30k miles. Definitely not the norm, but has happened a handful of times I can recount on here.

Feel for you OP - I don't know if I'd be more pissed or depressed if my clutch gave out w/ 25K on the ODO. I was hoping to be past 100K before needing a new clutch, hopefully not wishful thinking on my part:notsure:

I did find a couple other posts, one that is identical to my situation. It might be a factory issue that just doesn't have enough confirmed cases to influence Toyota to fix for free. After all, MTs only make up like 5% of they're customers right? What do they care of they lose those customers.

On the other hand, they sell a ton of MTs overseas. You might want to give Toyota corporate a call if the local dealer won't play ball.

I'm willing to try anything but I don't know where to start with that. How do I find who to call?

    26k miles? really sucks!
Damn man, thats waaay to early. You said you have been driving manuals for 15 years, so you are not a noob. Thats very strange there must be something else. Clutches should last 100k no problem.

Did you buy it used by any chance?

    Just did mine!
181k only did the clutch cause we were there doing the rear main seal!

Sorry I’m a 2nd gen does it still count?

2nd gens had LUK clutch’s failing at 30-40k.
Mine was an Aisin clutch and kept going.

No really but that sucks OP, 26k? Thats crazy. I read that doing reverse does burn off the clutch a bit more as well as towing a lot?

Omg 26k is way too early... Could it be a defect from factory? it sucks for you but I hope it doesn't happen to everyone!!
