If you do your homework upfront you don’t need to negotiate online.

As long as you know how much your trade is worth, how much the Tacoma you are looking to buy is worth —and is available, what financing terms you want —and qualify for, you can walk in and negotiate in person.

But yes, doing your homework upfront is big.

^ This. Knowing your shit so you’re able to confidently negotiate (online or in person) is the ticket. Plus side of being there in person is getting to beat them up on pricing and making them squirm.

Yup. I also found that locating the exact Tacoma you want can be kind of tricky on Toyota.com, compared to Jeep.com at least.

I wanted a Super White TRDOR with Premium Package and the orange interior trim. Toyota.com showed one available, but it wouldn't tell me where it was. When I talked to my local Toyota dealer, turns out the one I was seeing online was 200 miles south in Olympia. My dealer was willing to bring it up provided the other dealer still had it, and was willing to trade. One-and-a-half hours later, my dealer was able to to confirm the Tacoma was available and the other dealer willing to trade.

The only way to get this done was by walking into the dealership and let them handle it.

Negotiating online gives you the home field advantage
Why would you want to be on their turf. Nothing to gain by going into the dealership without a written buyers order.
Part of the buying process is a game. You and I are looking to pay the least amount the dealership will take. The dealership will try to Extract as much as they can from you and I

Going in person is a complete waste of time. Get them to give you the price you want before you go in and then it's easy peasy. Just sign and drive home. If I can get the same things done with a few phone calls and e mails and get the negotiation over before I step foot in the dealer is the way to go unless you like wasting your time .

I totally disagree. Going down in person let’s them know you a serious buyer and not some random online tire kicker. Let them know you are prepared to sign paperwork today IF they meet your price or you walk, but make sure they have your cell number.

Of course you have done your homework, know the exact truck you want, the maximum price you are willing to pay, etc.

Just picked up my first Tacoma - 2019 DCSB TRD OR in SSM.

Did a bunch of homework on the forum and hopefully didn't get too hosed on the deal. I originally wanted Cement, but that was hard to find in the area in a base model without extra packages, so ended up going with SSM with just the (seemingly mandatory) floor liner/sill protector upgrade from the factory. Did end up taking advantage of the $1,500 rebate as well.

    MSRP: $38,108
    OTD: $33,168

Correct, inclusive of tax and all fees. I had a trade-in that reduced that amount, but figured OTD was the most relevant number.

How do you open that conversation with the dealer? Do you just shoot an email to a bunch of dealers and say I want to pay $35k for that Tacoma listed at 41.8k? I want that same truck, with that same deal.

Basically yes. I will pay $32.3K. AND do NOT try to add dealer extras.

I read this forum found out that the 19s were being sold 5-6k off msrp so I started negotiations with dealers through email at 4k off msrp and eventually I got down to 6k off msrp. I took that and used it at a local dealer to negotiate. I had a firm number that I knew was fair and I wouldn't move off of it. Either you can do it or you can't but I've got a guy 3 hours away that can. You are local and I want to do business with you but not if you meet my number. They were 200 off my number so I got up to walk out and they immediately said ok, we can do it. You just need to research the market. You can't go in with a number thats not fair, you'll get no where; but if you know your number is do able - stick by it and be willing to walk away.

Also, never negotiate anything other than OTD price. Very important. I say negotiate but it's not really negotiating. You have your price already set you're just asking if they are the ones who will meet it. They'll haggle you and haggle you, but stick by your price.

Last thing, but find out exactly what you want. Color, trim, packages etc.. They can get you whatever car you want most of the time. So research what it is you want. What accessories you want. I wanted a pure base Quicksand DCSB TRD OR. With no accessories, not even mats. I used that while 'negotiating' to say that I didn't want the mats, take them out or don't charge me. Cause I don't really want the mats, husky's are better. So this is also a good method to use. Sometimes they will try to add stuff to your truck, if you dont want to pay for it tell them to take it off or no deal. I read somewhere they added tint to his truck after a deal and tried to add the charge. He said no way, take the tint off. They argued abit and of course he walked off the lot with a new truck, tint, and no tint charge.
