I just got the L90 gas pedal recall fix done to my '09 Tacoma. What a POS. I paid 25k for my truck and I can't get an uncut gas pedal? I went in and they told me they would order a new gas pedal and install it on my truck. (I knew to ask for a new one, not a butchered original thanks to these forums :) ). Well, when I look at the "new one", I can tell it's been hacked also. Looks like an elementary school kid did it. So I go and complain and they tell me they need to hack the new ones as well, per Toyota. So, I go home and call Toyota and they say the new ones don't need to be cut. So I call the stealership the next day and they say OK, we'll order a new one, but it will be hacked also. I don't know about anyone else, but like I told Toyota, you're building new trucks without hacked gas pedals, why can't I get an unbutchered one for my truck? Anyone else feeling frustrated with this?

Went in for some warranty work and told them to leave the recall alone. The tech agreed with me. He said it's useless and also 'prevents you from doing burnouts'.
Yeah .. I can't wait to do burnouts LOL

weird. i just checked my vin for recalls, and apparently mine is on, for the "accelerator pedal safety recall." although I have yet to get any correspondence about it. but from reading, it says they are to install a piece of rod or something to decrease the 'friction' on the pivot - something a long those lines. i didn't read anywhere about them needing to disect your gas pedal. im gonna keep mine the way it is, for now atleast.

Well, the ONLY reason I got it done is because of a thread on this site. Like someone pointed out in that thread," If you get in an accident and don't get the recall done, Toyota WILL deny any and all responsibility". So now I have to live with the hack job. Maybe I'll just start blogging about it and see if I can get some satisfaction that way from Toyota.

I dont think thats correct. The power kill only works if you're on the throttle first. So if you lock your brakes and hit the gas you should still be able to burn some rubber =)

Not another pedal thread .... I am not, I am not, I am not going to comment on this thread .... no way, no how ..... Damn, I just did! :D

By the way ... I had it done and could not be happier .... they did a GREAT JOB .... all the kindergarteners must have been in school because my cut is excellent .... Checkered Flag Toyota, Virginia Beach .......

ps .... your insurance company may deny (insider infomation - trust me) your claim if it is proven that the recall could have prevented any accident ... I just saying.

I took mine in for an alignment the other day (which I'm not sure is quite right, it's still pulling to the right a bit). When I was paying, the guy gave me one paper for "work I was paying for", and one paper to sign for "warranty work".

I said, "Warranty work?? What warranty work?". He said they did the gas pedal recall. I said, "....Oh, so you're saying they hacked off my gas pedal?". He interrupted me like he'd heard that before and said, "Not hacked off, they just grind the bottom off a bit". I said, "I didn't really want that done". He went on about how my insurance wouldn't cover me if I got in an accident and hadn't had recall work done. Whatever. I can see they might go that route with a stuck gas pedal, but I've gone 3.5 years now without that issue.

Better safe than sorry. I can't tell the difference on mine. Still works as it always did.

For the naysayers.... Yeah, you've been driving for years without a problem. No shit? That first time could kill you, your family, your children, and kill other people on the road.

Get the recall done. Period. It also includes the brake-overide which is probably WAY more effective than the pedal cut.

Give me a break Janster, I work in high stress situations under great pressure every day, I believe if my pedal stuck I would be able to keep my head and shift into neutral. I may blow my motor but I don't think I would call 911 & scream into the phone until I crashed into something.

This. Those people who called 911 while driving because of that are retarded. You don't have to work in high stress situations to remain cool enough to through the transmission into neutral or stop in some other way.

True just about anyone should be able to handle that IMO, & if you can't I don't want you on the same roads my family or I drive on.

    Yeah....right.

Dude, you have no frigin idea what type of situation you'd be in. The idea that everyone seems to think "I can handle it" is total bullshit. I'm sorry to be blunt - but I know damn well, your reaction time isn't gonna be as fast as you think depending on the situation. Your brain just doesn't THINK as fast as the shit can happen on the roadways.

Please, don't let the FIRST time be your last oppurtunity to say..."Oh yeah....I couldn't handle it"

Insurance won't cover you...it will, if you are in an accident there are no exclusions in any policy that will not cover you for not completing a recall. States would not allow that in any insurance contract. Myth busted. Toyota won't accept responsibility..come on, that is always there starting point, it is hard enough to get them to fix things they know they should be fixing like steering racks, wheel corrosion, leaf springs. If you are in an accident it won't be because the gas pedal is stuck. The codes can be pulled on your vehicle after an event such as an accident and it will show the position of the gas pedal, brake, speed etc. The investigation has already determined that the cause was operator error. It amazes me that people buy into this bunk and worry about hypothetical but untrue explanations to support their drinking of the kool aid. It is everywhere today, not accepting responsiblity...certainly an accident could not be my fault, it was the gas pedal, mat, fignut, weather, sun in my eyes, fill in the blank. If you sleep better at night because you had your pedal amputated I have a better solution, turn off the TV and stop believing everything you "hear" my rant included. If you do some research you will find the truth. Operator error.

You are entitled to your opinion just as I am mine, I can say with all confidence if I had enough time to call 911 I would certainly have the time to shift into neutral. I have seen people who are very capable & knowledgable but when the shit hits the fan they freeze and are f*cking worthless you may be one of those and if so I am glad you got the TSB done so you don't hurt someone else.

How do you know "damn well" anything about me, have we ever met? Have you ever seen me function in a situation under great stress? Thank god we all have people out there like you Janster to set us straight?

You're not required to have the recall done. Insurance will cover you.

However - if you tried to SUE Toyota, good luck.

I find it funny that the average consumer seems to think they know more about the situation than Toyota does. Toyota spent tons of money, time, and effort using tons of highly qualified people, including NASA to try and figure things out.

Cutting the brake pedal is lame - but I think it satisfies the 'simple' consumers who otherwise don't understand complex fixes. They need something they can 'SEE' to make them happy. It's all in PR.

The Brake-Over ride is something that makes much more sense to me and would have a better success rate than cutting the pedal.

So, ATLEAST.....get the brake over-ride done (ECU programming). I tried to request they not cut my pedal, but they did it anyway. No big deal, I can't tell the difference anyway.

You are a human. I don't need to know anything about you to know that your reaction time isn't fast enough in some situations.

    Accidents happen in SPLIT SECONDS.

Your BRAIN (which can vary with age and other factors)
    #1 Acknowledge the situation
    #2 Decide what to do
    #3 Complete the action

    Your CAR:
#4 Time or distance it takes for your vehicle to actually come to a stop or come to rest after you've 'completed the action' (as listed above).

    Jan -

I get what you're saying. But I'm unwilling to cede that portion of my vehicle's control to computers. The brake override *sounds* like it would have serious effects on someone's ability to two-foot offroad. No thanks.

The bottom line is that driving will always carry risks, and no amount of electronic nannies will ever solve that. Even completely automated trains, which are entirely computer controlled and run on tracks, occasionally have accidents.

I'll retain what little control I have of the truck as the driver (after VSC, etc.) and live with the increased risk.

As for not being able to sue Toyota, how would that even be relevant? Why would anyone worry about suing the company for a problem that doesn't exist? The sudden-acceleration hype that the media has played in to never occurred and will never affect any of us.

Janster, I agree with you on the brake override and it was a great job by Toyota on PR but your statement says it all about not accepting responsibility:

However - if you tried to SUE Toyota, good luck.

It has to be someone elses fault or even if it isn't lets try to get some money out of them anyway. You buy a vehicle, it is inherently dangerous, heavy and will go 100+ mph, get in an accident and the first reaction is sue Toyota.
If my vehicle is out of control I will not dial 911 or sue Toyota. I will put it in neutral, apply the brakes, turn off the key and pull to the side of the road. I believe in natural selection, thinning out the herd, so some people will not be able to keep a level head in an emergency situation and get killed when they are confronted with one. I have been in an auto accident before, both driver's were at fault, and it never crossed my mind to sue Ford or anyone else. If there has to be a lawsuit Toyota should sue the public school system for graduating these idiots and the MVA for giving them a drivers license.

    Doesn't exist?

Search google.... YOu'll find plenty of lawsuits againest Toyota for the sudden acceleration. Whether or not they're legit, the lawyers are frothing at the mouth to get these cases. This one even has a *submit your case* button.
