Old shovels are cool but HIGH maintenance, I've had a few. Stick with either a evo or twin cam if you wanna ride and not sit on the side of the road. I'll sell my 03 fuel injected softail for a couple bucks more than that.

The Buell was a engineering masterpiece. That cc rating is just a number. The first time you crack open any road bike your gonna say "whoa!" No matter the size of the engine or how much you do it. As you get use to what you thought was a safer choice, because of your size, and find yourself more and more at WOT (and you will) your gonna wish you had just gotten something with more power. Then you'll have to sell it for a loss most likely.

My first bike was a CB650 like the one you saw. But I had dirt bikes before that and rode other street bikes. Try to find a KZ900. Or a 2 stroke 4 cyl 400 Yamaha. They are freaking rockets.

Have you considered a dual sport? Something you can ride those back roads until they end but you just keep going? That will be my next bike. I want something I can take to an off road park on a trailer and ride. When I don't feel like wheeling the truck. Something to go off the beaten path on and get crazy with.

If you don't plan on riding alot then maybe the best bet is the cheapest thing you can find. Something you don't mind working on over this winter if you have a garage. Cause when the season starts you will be upset when it's not ready.

I'd keep looking for newer, with less work on your part. Maybe spend a little more for something like a Triumph, or a BMW.

Funny you mention kz900, when I move to my place in WV I'm gonna sell my green 76 kz900 & 78 kz1000 that I have sitting in my garage. I'm gonna have to downsize for the move to the mountains.
