It's incredibly frustrating. Guess I'll decline the recall for now. I'm sure they're going to be annoyed considering they had to order this recall part twice now for my truck.

They'll get over it. They can use the sealer on someone else's Taco.

Oh, and as previously mentioned, it's not a recall, it's a "Special Service Campaign".

I can get a picture if you really want one, but the gist of it is they take a closed cell foam and cover the top 1/2 of the sensor so that water drips over the sensor and runs off, rather than possibly getting between the sensor and the grill mounting surface.

This waiver and bulletin are a little odd to me. A lift will not affect the work they're doing, nor the reason behind why they are doing it. A lift might affect the sensors proficiency, especially if the stock level or rake is changed. Lifting the front should change the direction of the wave, possibly making it not detect smaller cars.

Again though, the service is for water interference. Also, odd since they will do it on Pro models, but not on pro gills on other models, even though the application is the same. Its really a big production for work that anyone can do at home, which I would recommend over signing anything that "might" admonish Toyota of liability.

Bizarre that lifting a truck a couple of inches throws off the TSS calibration. Hook a trailer on the back or throw some weight in your box and your front end points up, normal truck stuff.
If anything lifting a couple inches with a bit of rake should be no big deal.

Agreed. I asked a Toyota master tech how can the PCS radar compensate for having a few hundred pounds of cargo in the bed, but it can't handle a 3-inch lift. He couldn't answer me.

2019 TRD sport with OEM Pro Grille....the dealer refused to do the service because of the swap. I never had a problem with its functioning. I got the truck in December 2018 and now have 21k miles on it. Still no problems. I kept the original grille for the next owner if they want to get it done.

The wording of the refusal to perform the service says any grill change from any trim other than stock. I don’t have a pro grill but I do have the sr/5 grill on my sport, so I was curious how this would play out for me.

Dealer did the service no problem or mention of the grill (the software update and foam shield) and didn’t have to sign a waiver. 2 weeks prior to this I had the dealer change some settings with techstream for me (no additional charge) turn auto on pcs to off and a couple other things like passenger auto window off.

Dealer seems to be solid… except that all 4 wheels were scratched/dinged/chipped on the last service (rotation). Still waiting for a final decision on this though

2018 Off Road with Pro Grill. Dealer did recall last week with no issues during the 10,000 mile service. Did not have to sign anything. The paperwork said they installed the software update and sealer, but I did not notice any sealer on the sensor when I got home. I also have a front facing camera in front of the garnish and dealer did not say anything.

I just added the pro suspension to my OR with the oem pro grille. Next time I bring it in for service I’m gonna ask if they’ll perform the update since my truck now has the pro grill with pro suspension and it is now the correct height for the grille.

This sounds to me like Toyota is trying to keep ppl from putting on pro grilles because it diminishes the perceived value of the TRD Pro model.
The TRD Pro's grille is one of the key aesthetic features of that premium trim pkg and having every Tom Dick and Harry making their cheaper
Tacomas look like Pros isnt good for the Pros sales.

The funny thing is that the "recall" for the TSS is them draping a self adhesive foam pad over the back to hopefully keep water from getting between the two plastic pieces that the sensor sits in. Explain to me how having a pro grill is going to cause any issues with that? It isn't... It is just Toyota pissed that people are putting pro grilles on for a few hundred dollars instead of forking over several thousand dollars more for a TRD Pro model that comes with the cooler looking grille.

I had my TSS sensor recall done before I swapped the grill to avoid the problem... Brought it in for the 10k service last week and they complimented the grill and other minor cosmetic things I had done... No issues with the service.

Not all recall is draping an adhesive foam to the sensor. For me 2018 sport with OEM grill and garnish, they’re replacing the sensor. If the dealership won’t perform the recall find another dealership that will.

I got a call this morning and my service manager told me he can't perform the recall because the lift kit / ride height does not fit with the spec

If you only have issues in the rain just buy the rubber sticker they put over it. I did and no more issues when it rains.
