Water on brakes, disc or drum will cause rust. And disc can seize up too, they aren't perfect either. The best way to prevent this is to drive the vehicle and heat up the brakes, especially after giving them a thorough wash down or fording deep water.

If you do encounter a locked up drum then remove the wheel and hit the drum with a hammer moderately until it frees up. If you use the engine, it is possible to break components in the drum.

Mine does this whenever I have to back by boat trailer into the water. The brake drums get partially submerged in water and will lock up if I use the e brake right after. Happens every time. First couple times I took it to dealer. They replaced e brake cable and brake pads on warranty but it still happens. Now I just make sure not to use the e brake after doing this and it doesn't happen. The drums just don't like to be wet.

So If you just don't use the E-brake after getting the drums wet, this doesn't happen to you? Interesting. It makes sense, I just never considered this.

    Probably a bad wheel cylinder?

If it's just happening after being wet, and usually to older drums, I would guess more probably it's rusted/worn out springs and or rusted contact patches for the shoe. I'm not a mechanic though so it's very possible that the wheel cylinder is where the binding is happening. But I would need to get into the drum to find out, and I don't really want to do that.

bazz77 made an excellent point. The only time that I have seen this happen is when the mechanical brake is applied and left wet or in wet weather. The shoes are sticking to the drum. The longer it is left the tougher it is to break free. I have seen commercial vehicles that needed to get rammed by another commercial vehicle after sitting for months, the shoes would not release from the drum. On others, a simple wet weekend parked is enough to cause the same issue. Some shoe materials seem to be more prone to this than others.

As I noted before though. I have seen disc brakes do the same thing. Wet and mechanical brake applied, and they can lock up too, with the pads sticking to the discs.

Arrg, this just happened to me today. It was a snowy slushy day, and I pulled into a parking spot, I was in 4wdH when I pulled into the spot, and when I left I tried to back out and everything was wonky. At first I thought it was something with the 4wd. Finally I realized the left rear was stuck, I could back up, but you really needed to mash the gas. When I went forward it would drag the tire. I drove backward for 30 or 40 ft then hammered the brakes and that seemed to clear it. When the weather gets a little better, I will have a closer look.

BTW I have less than 10K on this truck, and it is a 2018.

As for people saying this is a problem with all drum brakes, I have never experienced this. I drove a 65 F100 for 10 years with no issues. My folks had a 65 Pontiac, and we never had this issue, and likewise my current 60 Impala -no issues. This is a design problem.

I could have sworn, I didn't have the parking brake on last night, but I was on auto pilot when I got in the truck to move it this morning. Anyway, here is a video:

I have an appointment at the dealer tomorrow -I am expecting BS.

I have seen the same thing happen to older style disc brakes that had the caliper and brake combined. ( my 1984 Mustang SVO ) I see this regularly with the equipment at work. On the front drums that don't have maxi brakes and aren't applied. This isn't out of the ordinary. Get it checked out for peace of mind but it does happen.

There was a reason why I posted that. However being 2 years ago I have no idea what that reason was. But yes, a wtf moment for anyone just popping in to read.

My ass would be numb and that would be worst than stuck brakes.

    Working on them
I had that happen when I first got mine So what I did was took the Drums off and found the parking brake adjusters rusty and the Moving parts without any lubrication on them So I put Ceramlub this is a Brake lubricant on all the moving parts that have contact points with other metal parts (very small amount is all it takes) Yes it was like doing a freaking brake job but it is not hard to do just takes time.

Have not had it happen again since and I back my boat into the water weekly and many times the rear wheel do have to get in the water also. Plus I do go off road a lot and have made several water crossings have not had any issues since doing this, I will be taking the Drums off again to look next time I rotate my tires just to see how things look.

I'm just wondering if you scattered a bag of the old style kitty litter on the ice behind the wheel if it would grab . I know this is not a fix but might keep you from having to be towed .
