    ^taking advantage of the circumstances to clear some land, or removing danger trees? looks like many of those trees should green up again.

    @VE7OSR They are Clearing fire damaged trees, Some of the trees look healthy but the fact is the roots grow on the surface under the vegetation and the fire burned away the vegetation and damaged the roots beyond the point of making a comeback. Some trees that look healthy are just falling from the wind making for a dangerous situation for everyone. @MQQSE can elaborate

    yup, familiar with the hazards forest fire damage leaves behind. I see what you mean about the shallow roots. Hopefully the fire didn't go underground anywhere near you, correction your brother's place.Those root networks can keep burning right through winter. What I found interesting after one of our major fires, is the deer will still use the same trails they did before, even though they could wander wherever they wanted to. Breaking through into root holes not so much fun. Where there are shallow wet pockets, we get morel mushrooms growing like crazy the next spring.
