Definitely the earlier year 2nd Gens with darker colors, like the red, dark blue, and black had the paint issues. Most of them in my town looked messed up. The hood and roof are full rusted or peeling bad. I have a 14' dark blue (BRM) and so far it's been good. What probably helps me is I ceramic coated my truck when I bought it. The hood and roof are in top shape.

The ceramic coat also helped our 03' Super White Tacoma. The hood was starting to get chalky. I ceramic coated it and it's like a clear coat went on. No chalky-ness. For those with no paint issues yet, consider it. I wish everyone else the best the getting their paint resolved with or without Toyota's help.

The paint on my 81 looks better than my 15... I’m really confused why the paint is so bad on these new trucks

No issues outside of a couple of rock chips on my impule pearl red. I've not waxed for... 8 years.

Because they have nothing left to prove and can try to cut costs where they find a compromise.

Paint Product A is 10/10 color and durability but costs them $10 per gallon (obviously hypothetical)

Paint Product B is 8/10 color is perfect but durability is “good” but only costs them $6 per gallon.

Saving 40% on paint in the books and most people won’t complain and will just touch up themselves.

    More points to add:
    Does it save the earth?
Will it last long enough to where the warranty is expired?

Funny thing is my other hobby involves guitars.

on electric guitars, people WANT the paint of old that wore out and faded and chipped.

I just got my letter from Toyota today for my 2010 "Blizzard Pearl" Rav4. The papers say, This Customer Support Program provides coverage for involved vehicles with the factory-applied Blizzard Pearl (Toyota paint code 070) or Super White (Toyota paint code 040) paint colors. Mine was repaired back in 2016, I just hope I can find all the documents they're asking for so I can get a reimbursement. Now also own a 2013 "Super White" Taco, & now wondering how long till the paint starts peeling off it too. Shoot, just something else to worry about.

Any idea if any of the 3rd gens might be affected? Can't see them changing paint between 2015 and 2016s then onwards.

OEMs started moving away from single-stage, acrylic-based paints in the late 70s/early 80s, moving towards using urethane-based paints with multiple-stage (e.g. base/clear) coatings. Then fast forward again to the late 90s/early 00s, when water-based paints took over as the main painting medium*. Now they're shifting again, towards e-coatings for everything it seems like.

*Water-based automotive paints were around in the late 80s, but they suffered adhesion promoter/primer problems. Remember the peeling GM/Chrysler paint jobs in the 90s? Yup, water-based adhesion failure.

Hope that helps clarify why paint is so bad on newer vehicles compared to older vehicles.

No mention of what yrs. or models. The way I read it, it covers any Toyota that has paint code 070 or 040. But that's just my understanding.

....because of the EPA. Just about all automotive paint is water based now.

Weird that Super White is one of the impacted colors then. To the best of my knowledge it is single stage (one of the few still out there).

Yup, and to be honest I didn't know that Super White was affected until this thread, agreed it's weird (especially since my '05 is 040 and it looks fine for being un-garaged :notsure:)...but looking at history; The vast majority of those paint problems GM and Chrysler had in the 90s was with standard white paint.

This is probably a rehash of the 90s debacle and, I'm guessing here but, it's probably due in no small part to the EPA forcing even-lower VOC content in paint...again.

Conversely, the original patina vehicles are highly sought after.

my white '07 isn't real bad but I've got little rust pits on the roof and the vertical parts near the door windows.
