I've never understood the appeal of the Pro. It's just an OR hyped up on dealer mark-ups and a different set of shocks. I think it's crazy to spend that sort of money when you can get a fully loaded OR for
$42k. Most people are gonna take off the suspension and the wheels anyways and do their own. Just seems crazy to me IMO.

 

The price difference between the Pro and OR (fully loaded) is dwindling. Roughly a $3k difference on this new model.

 

Sort of, people are getting loaded ORs for invoice (around $42k), no one is paying anything less than MSRP on Pros which are $47k+, that's a good chunk of savings. You can do a nice set of coil overs, 285s and wheels for $3k. But you dont get the skewp, badging, grille or lights.

 

That's actually what I like about it. It's a little more subtle than other versions of the pro I have seen, and I appreciate a more subtle appearance.

 

Wow, this is what I've been wanting and ot really looks awful. The tires and wheels don't look good on it, the color doesn't look great, I won't buy one with a roof rack or the steps.

 

Just got this email from a dealer, they got their first 2020 in stock:

 

The ability to negotiate on price is definitely a win for the OR. Typically, the PRO's are priced where they are at (or even more in some cases). Doing 2 quick builds of the OR vs the Pro, this is what I came up with:

TRD OR with highest package that doesn't include the tonneau cover: $44,580
TRD Pro with no extras: $47,840

Difference of: $3,260 (both sold at MSRP)

Pro "Extras" over the OR:
front skid plate $ 300
cat-back exhaust $ 630
Fox internal bypass shocks $ 2,900
rigid led fog lights $ 472
hood $ 900
front grille $ 200
wheels $ 1,000

Total $ 6,402

Now, here's where things can get a little funky. There are certain items above that can be had for less and others that can be had for more. I tried to get prices from the TRD shop for most items. There are some things I left off like shift knob, pro floor mats, badges, etc. Also, for me, I'll be selling the following:

Suspension
Wheels/tires
Fog lights

Netting me somewhere around $3,900 in parts sold. This is where I came up with my own personal justification for a Pro. That, and I just want it.

 

$3900 seems a bit optimistic for supension, wheels/tires and fogs. But I get your thought process. Im just saying you can buy a loaded OR, add your own wheels/tires/lift and still pay less ($42k invoice + $3k for lift, wheels/tires= $45k). After selling your wheels, tires, suspension its a bit of a wash because your still needing to buy your new suspension, wheels and tires. The aesthetic items you have listed there like hood, grille, skid plate (its aluminum garbage), dont really add to functionality.

 

I have potential buyers already for the following:

Suspension: $2k
Wheels: $1100
Tires: TBD
Lights: $400

Not too far off of the $3900.

Already purchased the new suspension at $3,200. Wheels I want will be $1,100. Tires $600 (Father works at Michellin & we get a large discount) and fogs will be something from BD or the like to go in a whole new front bumper. I'll still be spending more with the Pro, there's not doubt about that. People will hate on it and say I'm stupid, or whatever, but I like the cosmetic extras that don't add functionality. At the end of the day, it's my money and it's how I want to spend it.

 

What suspension did you get?

 

I went with the OME BP-51 with HD Dakar Leaf pack and SPC upper control arms.

 

Agree totally your money and buy what makes you happy. I can’t believe you found someone to fork over $2k for the suspension and $400 for the fogs. Nice.

 

Good choice. I ran OME setup on my 15.

 

Dang everyone is missing the point here trying to give the (lack of) value prop for the Pro. Its not about that - its only for exclusivity and resale, and for those that NEED the top of the line model. Its plain to see to everyone that you can build a more capable OR rig for far less $ than a Pro.

 

I looked at the link in your sig. You've owned a lot of Tacoma's, lol. In all of the color choices I would stick to as well. I called Fox, Kings and ARB. Just had the best experience with ARB. That along with the needs I have for the vehicle and my own personal research.

Question, how did you like the SCS wheels? I've never owned a set, but those are the ones I'm actually looking at.

 

I agree with everything you say here. However, I feel the ride quality off and on road would have to be better with the Fox suspension. Could be wrong though, as I haven't ridden in one.

 

Bahaha, single at 34, definitely have a small vehicle problem. I’ve ran fuels, XDs, OEM TRD upgraded wheels and SCS, SCS by far had the best fit and finish and unique, least bro looking too. I wouldn’t hesitate running them again someday but living broke nursing student life right now.

 

Hahaha. I hear ya. I'll be 34 in 2 weeks myself. Luckily, I have an understanding/patient wife as in the 34 years on this planet, I've had 34+ vehicles. And she has been there for all of them (been together since I was 17). This will by second Tacoma, and my 3rd Toyota overall (other was a 4runner).

 

Glad to know I’m not the only one with a problem. People gasp when they hear how many I’ve owned. But I’m an informed consumer and don’t lose much between swaps, especially with the tacos and their resale. I’ve had a few fords, bmw, Honda and a Jeep. But 9 tacos all gens and configs, wrenched on a few too, definitely my area of expertise.

 

My "expertise" is more on jeeps. I've owned 8 of them. TJ's, XJ's and YJ's. I've lost a few $$ here and gained a few $$ there. This 2020 truck will be the 2nd brand new vehicle I've ever owned though. First was a 2017 Silverado that I turned around and sold in 2018. Been driving an old paid off F-150 since the beginning of 2018 putting my money back deciding what I was going to buy. Now I'm deciding how much to put down versus how much to spend on extras. 1st world problems.
