Not necessarily. The key is to research the product and only buy quality parts.

Hard to beat, bolt on N-fab's at $417. I've had mine for 5 years now and no issues period.

N-fabs aren’t bad. We used to sell a bunch of them. Problem is not a lot of stuff holds up to the harsh winters and salt in NY. You don’t have that problem in Alabama.

OP if your thinking sliders, maybe find a used set and get them coated with some Bedliner. They will look new and you’ll spend about half what it normally would cost.

I equate it to people saying "I want either tire A or tire B. Which one should I pick?" Then someone chimes in and says "Well what about tire C for these reasons, as it may be a better fit overall."

They don't know what they don't know, so sometimes it's not a bad thing to suggest things outside of what specifically looking for.

    True.

It still boggles the mind as to why salt is still used on roads, instead of sand...

Too much freeze thaw cycles. The sand helps for traction but not so much on ice. The roads would look like a beach here with all the sand you would need.

I grew up in the PNW, not AL and it was never an issue there, but we also used studded tires for snow/ice.

Shipping is something that will kill any deal on sliders due to the weight. What region (if you're comfortable putting that on an internet forum) are you located? Someone may be able to make a recommendation based on location that could save shipping.

For instance, near Houston, Shrockworks makes some awesome stuff. I'm not really into the 3rd gen game, but when you add dimpled filler plates to the 4Runner sliders, they flatten out and make great steps. If you're in Texas, I guarantee someone could TW express them to anywhere in the state. This is what I did for my wife's 5th gen 4Runner. I think I paid $600 powder coated with filler plates.

Im in North Carolina. A handful of good fab shops close by, but im really holding off for a used set of sliders or to find evidence decent running board. so far im only digging the OEM was aluminum ones.

BudBuilt is where it's at in NC, but they are pricey! Top notch quality though. I think there are some others. I'll have to rack my brain to see if I can remember them.

Salt lowers the freezings temperature of water. Thus less ice. Salt also devolves and washes away, so no removal necessary. Sand does nothing to prevent ice. Sand would help on top of existing ice but does not help once it gets covered by ice. It also needs to be removed else it builds up and clogs drainage.

angled up with no filler plate. Once the filler plate is added, they are flat.

Those so far are my favorite steps y'all have posted. I wish you were closer. they're hard to find here priced well. For the prices people want, sliders are pretty close.
