How big of a spare tire?

Hey guys,

Hope TW is doing well. Still on this deployment but figured I could at least get half way ready before I get back.

Question is this, how big of a spare tire can I fit in the space and rim? Also, which size would I go for to match up with my other wheels/tires?

Specs are as follows:

2009 Tacoma access cab(not sure if that matters) 5 lug
Running 245/75/16 right now.

I'm assuming the spare is a 15" rim? Would I be able to get semi close to that to make it work if I was to ever blow out?

You can fit a 33" tire in the spare spot if you bend the tabs that hold the tire in place of remove the rear exhaust hanger and cut the exhaust so it dumps just past the axle if that is what you are asking.

 

Reckon a 265/75/16 spare would fit the space where a 265/70/16 resides now? Maybe an inch bigger in diameter? I had switched to 75 profile and ended up with a new one in that size as well and got to thinking I hope the sucker will fit the space.

 

I have been wondering the same thing. It looks like the 265/75 should fit, but I'd like to know for sure

 

I have a 285/70/r17 mounted on the steel rim and didn't have to do anything to make it fit.

 

Thanks for the responses guys! But here's the deal, I started out with a base model, so my stockers were 15s. Tiny tires on there at that. I guess my real question is would I be able to squeeze on a set of tires on that 15, to match the 245/75/16 I have on the truck now? This probably could wait til I get home in November, but I'm bored as shit out here!

 

I would imagine that all 2nd gens have the same spare tire area. So if a 265 (31.5+/- Diameter) factory spare fits, and in my case a 285 (33+/-" Diameter) fits, you should be good to go.

Perhaps you could check out the part numbers of the spare tire mounts and compare them between different style trucks.
