Perhaps one day soon. Not yet though, haven't the faintest clue how to operate any of those HAAS CNC mills or lathes

Their pretty easy if you have any knowledge of 3d cad or solidworks. Nowadays all you do is put your drawing into a program like MasterCAM or Autocad/CAM and it basically writes the code for you, all you have to specifiy is what tool to use where, and locate your zero points.

Being an apprentice, you can have fun looking forward to cleaning those things out lol. The one we had in Highschool would get a distinct odor inside if we didnt change the coolant out often. Gonna be a fun job, really is something new everyday if its a job shop.

I'm real good with SolidWorks but beyond that I've never had to do anything to turn my own drawings into a file prepared for a CNC

That's awesome, congrats...a friend of mine that got laid off from the company I'm at earlier this year, went and got an apprenticeship at a electrician company where he's getting paid well to basically learn how to do the job, like you said. And in ~2 years time when he has enough hours logged he'll double his income as a certified electrician. It's a tempting route I gotta say, I haven't really looked into how hard it is to get an apprenticeship though. I wonder if it gets harder to find the older you get

I think it is getting to the point where the skilled labor workforce is spread so thin that anyone who can learn and can physically function in the position will be given a chance

My instructors have been shoving that idea down my throat for 5 years now. Its the truth. Anybody who has the drive to work and learn will be given a job.

I've got a good job right now that pays pretty well and I've been working at for going on 5 years now, but TBH I don't think I've got much more room to grow here. And there's been a lot of downsizing in the last couple years here (fortunately with my position I'm pretty secure unless the company folds). But without much more room to grow it has me thinking of other possible opportunities lately.
