I spent today practicing dumping weight safely off of a back squat after I've been near stuck a few times at full depth and never comfortable with dumping the bar. I think if I get comfortable dumping the bar than I'll feel more comfortable going heavier. I've been stuck around 445# single PR for a while now. Probably good for anyone doing squats as it's probably the most dangerous lift to lose form on. I've gotten 405# stuck on my chest with Jesus spotting and wiggled weights off and obviously deadlifts you just stop. Back squats are the most committed once you're doing it imo.

On the plus side, my raw total last year was 1250# and I'm around 1350# this year. My Fiance gives me a few wisecracks about a year of sustained bulking (about 20% bf), but good gains so I take it in stride.

Because it's impossible to use a mixed grip on Oly lifts... The hook grip is primarily for Olympic also due to the fact that straps aren't allowed. Every Oly lifter uses hook grip because it's an Olympic trained grip, while I only know of maybe 2-3 big deadlifters who use it over mixed, and they really only do it that way because people think it makes them tough lol

I use straps because strongman allows them in competition so why do a grip that hurts when heavy and isn't as strong or reliable as straps?

Btw I also train a shit load of grip for other events... So even though I do full deadlifts with straps I can still double overhand (no hook) 500+ on a deadlift grip hold event pretty easily.

If you only hook grip because you think it makes you tough or because using straps is for "bitches" then that's silly and illogical.

If the goal is to pull the most weight possible, the the obvious choice is the grip that allow you to hang on to the most weight.

for me, that’s a hook all day every day. Who cares which grip I use? Nobody.

I'm not arguing your personal opinion and what works best for you...

I'm saying hook grip is primarily Olympic because it's the only grip other than DOH you can use in an Olympic lift.

If hook grip works for you that's great! However, if you aren't competing or you can use straps, they will always be more secure than a hook grip, as they pretty much remove grip from the entire lift.

For sure. I use straps for anything above 4-5 reps usually because hook for reps is just cruel.

Straps are usually allowed in strongman comps aren’t they?

    Yep, unless it's a grip/hold event obviously.

I’ve always thought strongman would be the most fun of the strength sports.

It's a blast, you should try it!

You don't have to be giant as there are lightweight and middleweight classes as well.

Uh then you may be doing them wrong or you have a weak core.
Make sure your back is hyperextended when you do them and only do within your ROM.

Your ass should be hurting when you do them LOL

I’m with you on the pull ups. Ever do towel pull ups for grip strength?

I have a weak core. I’m trying to fix it. I think that’s what my bench has always been awesome but my squat and deadlift has been sub par.
