What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

I have been doing some research since posting this originally. I am completely turned away from replacing the entire arm. I am just looking at LBJ and as I found out this morning checking control, steering and sway bar end-links, my upper ball joints are quite greasy as well. I might just do lower and upper at the same time. I have noticed a lurch sound when I enter my driveway over the slight curb and now that my truck is back on the ground I cant see the gap in the LBJ anymore so its definitely in need of replacement.

I have also been reading that even the Toyota replacement OEM ones aren't all that they are snuffed up to be. Any replacement ones I have read people using don't last as long as the stock originals. Definitely need to do more reading on this topic, I think I have some time but want to get them done before it gets cold out cause I as well do not have a shop, and my garage is cramped.

 

Good to hear on the whole arm. Don't spend so much time researching that you don't get around to it. Get the OEM and be done with it.

Yeah going forward its more research into where to get Toyota parts with out getting bent over by a dealer. Also lining up the tools I still need.

As for tools. Free rentals at your local auto parts store. I don't think you need much more than a ball joint press as far as specialty tools go. Of course, you'll need the 21mm socket for the lug nuts and 19mm socket for the other nuts that you'll need to remove. It should be easier if you drop the LCA all together. If you go that route, disconnect the shock last.

 

Yeah, I didn't recognize it either. It made a spectacular sound.

It didn't do the forward yoke any favors. I'm so angry right now that I'm calm.

 

At least its a relatively cheap and easy fix. How many miles before the kaboom? Spicer makes the OEM ones. They are a little more expensive than some of the other options, but much cheaper than going through the dealership. RockAuto is where i found the best deal on mine (hint: they have TW code for 5% off) even after shipping.

 

RTT was delivered today, I feel so broverlander now. Smittybilt Overlander XL. Tent seems great, putting it together and mounting it was easy, but was a pain in the ass to get it up on the rack by myself. I used two 10' 2x4s and pushed it up like a ramp. I think this thing might stay mounted until I am done camping for the season. I anticipated it being easier to un/mount solo so I may have to have my wife help when I need to mess with it. Parking garages are going to be fun until the end of October. My work parking garage has signs for 7' and I measured in at 7'3". Lets hope it was the bean counters that decided 7' and there is actually a little room to spare to cover their asses.

want to hear something funny? I was going to replace all of them next week, the parts are in my garage.

It was the front u-joint, on the slip yoke. worst case? I replace the slip-yoke and the joint... while I rebuild the drive line during inspection.

scoring shouldn't effect a whole lot except the replacement u-joint fit. I just hope nothing else is cracked or broken.

New front breaks. RF wheel bearing and hub assembly was done too.

 

Bad news on my end. I may have to sell Rosie. Don't want too, but if things keep going on the same trajectory, I'm going to need something with better gas mileage and cheaper insurance. Don't even know where to begin on asking price... Feeling really down about it.
