I wouldn’t recommend subsonic .223 for anything but fun.

    My opinion:
I think you may be a little bit too focused on noise.

My take on noise level for home defense is, I don’t want to be deafened, but most calibers suppressed with a quality modern suppressor will not disorient or incapacitate me due to noise or concussive force.
Hell, when I shot my first deer with a .243 I didn’t hear a thing, there’s a good chance the same thing will happen if I have to drop the hammer on an intruder.

In my opinion the biggest advantage to the suppressor for home defense and to a certain extent, range time, is not the noise reduction but the large reduction of muzzle concussion.
With the concussion mitigated indoor shooting may not be comfortable with supersonic rounds but it’s nowhere near as confusing/mind numbing.

Each person has a unique background with firearms but most people that didn’t grow up bird hunting or shooting clays really aren’t so familiar with the operation of their shotgun so that it becomes muscle memory.
Personally I can reload my AR and charge it faster than I can diagnose why my shotgun didn’t fire, pump it, and add 1 Shell to the tube.

I appreciate this perspective. So, go with the best home defense round and simply suppress it? I'll do more research... what about the 223 caused you to prefer it over a 9mm or larger/different rifle round? I have done quite a bit of game hunting and some bird hunting. My noise paranoia is based on shooting a lot of 300wm and 12ga... anyway, I appreciate the sincere response.

Understood. I grew up hunting and shooting clays. I agree that you won't hear the blast in a hunting, or life or death situation but it will still damage your hearing.

I have several shotguns and 1 AR. If I had to defend my house, inside, give me my 18 inch 8 shot Mossy 500 every time. :)

You don’t need any sights at all to accurately hit a target at the ranges inside a home. Pistol, shotgun, rifle, whatever, learn to shoot and the rounds will all hit a target at those short ranges without any use of a sight. You also won’t blow out eardrums and wind up in a puddle of your own puke from shooting inside unsuppressed. I’ve fired a ton of rounds indoors (12ga, 9mm and full auto 5.56) without hearing protection and nothing other than the usual hearing damage happened. If you can afford an SBR and suppressor they are definitely fun it not at all necessary for home defense.

My hearing would be the last of my concerns if someone entered my home and I needed to use a firearm to defend myself.

Exactly. And if you live in a place that it could happen, maybe move? If you can afford 'whatever it takes' the maybe put the money towards a better place?

I live in a sparsely populated area so it's hard for me to wrap my head around circumstances that some folks may encounter. Petty thieves are here, but no home invaders..... so far.

I can shoot. My wife cant though, and likely will never learn to be proficient. Hearing is important. A 12ga shotgun blast in a small room will rupture eardrums. Anything above 150bds is enough to do this. Once your eardrum is ruptured, the rapid pressure change in your middle ear from whatever caused the rupture throws off your vestibular sense giving you vertigo. So, noise is worth considering. While my hearing would be among the least of my concerns in a home defense situation, I can afford to protect it. I dont understand everyone's resistance to this?

Y'all realize houses cost more than ARs, right? Even a suppressed, SBR, with some flashy paint job from a high-end retailer is much less than a house. I live in a very safe neighborhood, in a very nice house; but I'm not preparing for the common, I'm preparing for the uncommon in hopes that I will never have to use my firearm.

I'm going to buy the correct tool for this purpose, and ideally never use it aside from enjoying time at the range. I want something easy for my wife to shoot with minimal practice - that is an AR with a red dot. And I want something that wont harm my body more than the circumstances necessitate, making suppressed ideal.

So, please comment on how you would setup your rifles for this purpose. Also... this is the AR15 thread, is it not?

Crime can happen anywhere. With so many people on drugs, acting crazy and stealing shit to feed their habits, I’m starting to question what really is safe anymore. Some thieves go out to non populated areas to steal shit, because there is less people around and chances to get caught. Bigger cities are crawling with cameras now, people out in the country never had much of a need for them so they don’t have them and some thieves know this.

If you want a suppressed SBR go with a 12.5” 6.8SPC. You’ll fire a heavier bullet faster than a lighter bullet in a 12.5” 5.56 and the tone of the muzzle blast is much easier on the ears. Even suppressed my 10.5” 5.56 is not a lot of fun to shoot without hearing protection because of the sharp/high pitched tone.

I agree to an extent. It is an incredibly rare instance where your dog barking isn't sufficient to scare off a possible intruder. I think nice neighborhoods are targeted more often than poor neighborhoods for home invasion due to the reward in property value. I felt safer living in a shitty house in a shitty neighborhood because non of us had anything worth stealing. Regardless, I am a firearm owner, and I CCW, so it seems silly not to have an ideal weapon for home defense if I win the home invasion lottery.

The shotgun platform as home defense has been around since the beginning of time.

Just because it works in 1952, doesn't mean it is the same in 2019.

    Ar 15 for home defense
    Red dot or laser
    Light
Two mags strapped to each other

    Take training
    And practice
    Practice
    Practice

    Until you are ready

    Then take more training
    Rinse repeat

An AR might be a great choice for home defense for someone who lives in the middle of no where with no close neighbors. For me I’d be worried a stray round going into one of my neighbors houses. I’ll stick to my pistol or shotgun (no slugs)

You can train all you want but the key is to keep a level head in a situation.

In 2006 I had a armed home invasion at 4:00 in the afternoon.( my front door was unlocked) It ended with the POS laying face down on my kitchen floor with my G26 pointed at the back of his head waiting for the Sheriff to come and collect his ass and take him away.

The second one was 6 months ago at 3:16 in the morning my Dog started raising hell my Ring doorbell went off and the POS started pounding on my front door. While he was holding a pistol in his other hand. Wife was on the phone with 911 and I let him pound on the door while I had a G19 pointed at him through the door while waiting on the Sheriff. This ended when a K-9 unit ran the POS into the woods by my house and chewed his ass up.

I live in a very nice neighborhood. be safe everyone.

Exactly: there are only three houses on my street. And we all are armed. Even my kids call before they come over.

I hunted when I was kid then got away from hunting and guns for a while. Then, My neighbors car was stolen out of their driveway (located just around the corner at some apartments) guessing some kids stole it. A bit later their front door was kicked in at 4 am one morning, while they were home. Afterwards, my now ex-wife didn’t feel safe in our home because of that and 2 hole invasions that happened within our city. So I went out and got a remington 870 for home defense. Then joined a gun club and now shoot clays and target shooting and have got back into shooting.

First time I had to dash for a pistol (lesson learned)
Second time my pistol was on the nightstand.
Now I carry everywhere except in the shower. and have cameras inside and outside my house.
