The 4.88 mega thread!!

@H3llRid3r FYI, that 19.4 is from a 60 mile trip round trip after top off. Just kept it @ 2k rpm. If I would've stayed on the freeway, it would jumped over 20 mpg. Usually it'll be 15'ish +/- 1mpg prior to 4.88 gears.

 

Took a drive out on the road after work to get some more miles in. Almost there. Fuel mileage @ 21.1 mpg driving on highway on 33’s about 65 mph. Noticing trans temps are also down about 5-10 degrees lower about than normal, need more time with regular driving and 90+ degree day to confirm reduced trans temps.

I’m running the Beta 4.88 tune. It’s nice.

The shift points are damn near perfect and power to go. Good mpgs too

 

So went and picked up Lucas dinosaur oil for the break in. Had to go make two trips at two different Autozones to get enough oil. My last 5.5 mile trip home avg 22 mpg. Yes, my A/C has been on the entire time. Noticing the mpg bar drops coming up to speed, but once I’m at cruising speed the mpg just starts to climb. These two pics from city(suburbs) driving.

 

That’s the beauty about the 4.88’s. Most people would think your mpgs go down, but since the engine can maintain the momentum of these heavy mid-size trucks. The power to weight ratio is better allowing the engine to not work as hard to maintain speed = better mpgs.

I can see where stock size tires may actually decrease the mpgs in some cases with 4.88’s, but not sure

 

Can’t remember my factory OEM mpg since I wasn’t stock for long. Perhaps averaged about 17-19, worse if I drove aggressive. On open highway I was 18-21, but could get near 23-24 mpg on 55 mph roads. Did forget to mention I do have the latest TSB from, 8 months back or so. Also removed my front air dam when I added my first set of wheels & tires.

 

Isn’t the MPG display thrown off by the larger tires?

Same here. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t get quoting Toyota Dash MPGs while on 33”s, unless there’s been a re-calibration.

 

Technically wouldn’t the mpgs actually be more than what’s showing?

Correct, mentioned in my earlier post that I'm 3 mph off with 33's. Its only off from tire size, not the gearing. MPG is better than what my dash calculates.

Right now i'm running 285/70/17 and no additional weight like Bumpers, RTT etc. From what i've read it sounds like 4.88 would be the way to go correct?
I've also seen people running 4.88 with OvTune, is it just as good to just run 4.88 gears with no Ovtune?

So I’ve been slowly reading this thread. Haven’t truly been keeping up with it... looking into gears and a front locker. Trucks a DCLB OR with front and rear steel bumpers, full steel skids, sliders, and 285’s.. trucks a daily driver and driving about 60-80 miles a day.. should I be shopping for 4.88’s or 5.29’s?...

 

33” 285’s or 34’s?

Also, how fast are you driving in your daily commute?
