Hey all, here’s a puzzler. I’ve developed a shrieking kind of squeal from somewhere within my 2009 Tacoma TRD Sport. It sounds, to me, like it might he a belt kind of noise, but the belt has been replaced within the past year. Also as belts turn whenever the truck is running, I would think that it would make the noise all the time. It doesn’t. The squeal is intermittent, but the truck must be moving forward. If the truck is driving the shriek will kick in, but not always. Speed does not seem to impact the sound much except for slowing to a stop. That is to say, the sound varies little from 30-70mph, but if you slow to a stop then towards the end the pitch will get higher and squeal to a stop as the truck comes to a stop.
Suggestions have included the carrier bearing, tensioner pulley, other pulleys, wheel bearing. Again, I would think that a belt noise would be whenever it is running. It also does not seem to vary whether or not the lights or AC are on. It does not make the noise while idling, it does not make the noise while in reverse.
    Thoughts?

Double check belt tension. Even check it with a belt tension gauge if you have one.

So pulleys or belt tension would be quiet when the truck is running and idle, but make noise when the truck is moving forward? I assumed that since the belts turn when it’s idling it would also make noise then too. I don’t know anything about this though, my question is for clarification and not doubting your suggestion. I’m definitely listening.

Splash shield/s hitting the rotor, how are your brake pads? Newer or are they quite worn? Check both inside and outside pads on both sides.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
I'll go with pulleys, idler and tension. I just changed mine. You would swear it was the transmission pump but tranny all quiet when your under the truck. Changed my pulleys and WOW what a difference. Also could feel how one was very gritty when turning it by hand.

Bad Bearings on any of the belt wheels could cause this. Currently have a bad idler doesn't make noise constantly, seems more random but thats what mine is. You can check with a mechanics stethoscope there pretty cheap. Also check brakes to see if anything is rubbing.

The brakes are brand new, including calipers. I have a suspect tensioner already, problem with using a stethoscope to diagnose sound is that it only makes the noise while the truck is in forward motion (not reverse). I may have to bite the bullet and have someone put in on a rack so that it can be put in drive while sitting still.

The stethoscope should be able to tell you bearing weather making the noise or not if its good you'll get smooth humm if not then it just sounds rough and bad checked mine with no noise at the time and it was very evident which one it was.

close to full lock kinda of like when im parking or pulling into a gas pump to get gas I hear the squeal, yesterday I was turning in a round small cul de sac and I was squealing I went around a few times to see if it would stop and try to locate it, I was assuming the serpentine belt. I have been doing regular power steering fluid remove replace with Valvoline maxlife every 5k miles at OCI, although during the winter was hearing some strange knocking in the pump area that got my attention on very cold startup, the noise was right around the pump/pulley area as far as I could guess.

Could be your pulley as well not sure what knocking you would have been hearing tho.

I was just searching the 4 cylinder thread for this issue it seems a prevalent issue among the 2.7l trucks, lots of replaced parts and still has a squeal on a lot of them ,the cold weather knock could be the smog pump, but on mine I cracked the hood cause the noise got my attention in the winter sure sounded like the power steering pump but went away pretty quickly this was at about 30 degrees cold out.https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2009-2-7-engine-squeak-squeal.232101/

this is exactly what im thinking at 114k miles might be stretched out and slipping, big question is get the OEM belt $80+ or an aftermarket $25, the OEM went trouble free till now
