I wouldn't expect to get much off of one, to be honest. Supply and demand out of the gate is in the dealership's favor.

@Mfj911 The large buckets the dealers make money off of is financing, ADM, trade-ins/preowned sales, and service.

Don't think it will drastically impact your negotiating ability if you put more down or finance through a third party. It's the sum of all the parts and honestly I don't even mention how I'm financing or that I have a trade in etc. until the number is finalized because then often this ridiculous shell game ensues. It's right up there with them asking me what do I want my monthly payment to be? Just keep your eye on the prize and be an informed consumer and get everything finalized before you walk in there so you have the upper hand.

Honestly, what worked for me when I purchased my Pro was that I emailed multiple dealers on the same email saying whoever came back first with the best number I would be in that day to sign the paperwork. Then I had them using their efforts against each other as well which kept things in check more. Good luck and good hunting.

I did the same. I called and said they had one chance to give me their lowest out the door number. Pitted the dealers against each other and told them they would have a 2 vehicle deal if they "win". My mother-in-law was wanting to buy a Camry and just purchased one this month. Helped both of us on price. More so her then men. Mine should be a simple deal. No trade-in and I have my own financing secured with a blank check to write to whichever dealer I choose.

Agreed with all of this. I avoided the monthly payment number, term length, etc. Fortunately I was able to sell my car privately and it was simple enough to just negotiate the OTD price. Had all the paperwork signed with an hour and I was on the road in my truck. Also, that is GENIUS emailing competing dealers all in the same chain. I might have to try that in the future.

Sound advice. I appreciate it. I'm in no hurry either. I may wait until this time next year and try to score a 2020 then.

Yeah what is the point in having the center line if it doesn't line up with center. First time I tried to use it to hook up a trailer I backed up to it and had it perfectly on the center line. Got out to put my ball in and hitch up and it was like 6 inches off. Stupid.

Even better, wait for something to fall into your lap and strike. The worst spot to be in is someone who needs a car asap because their old one broke down etc. That's like blood in the water for them. Just keep your eyes out and pop in on a random Tuesday at the end of the month and you should make out well.

Agreed, there is a little bit more of the law of scarcity and the newness factors with the 2020 Pro's. However, it is also fresh in dealers minds what happened when they outran their headlights on the 2019 Pros by holding onto them too long and it backfired so now they are scrambling to purge aged inventory.

Yup it creates a feeding frenzy of sorts. I found that it helps keep everyone honest and more importantly keeps me more removed from the situation. It's easy to get sucked in by the pretty lights and shinny new paint when you're on the lot and next thing you know you're giving them the shirt off your back and your first born child without even thinking twice.

If seen its taken to crazy levels for a deal. There was a story of a guy getting a side weekend job at a dealership and as soon as he qualified for the employee discount pricing bought what he wanted and he put in his two weeks. Not really my course of action or worth my time but kudos to him for working on the best deal possible for himself.

Oh wow, that is taking it to a whole other level haha. I think if most just keep the overall price in the forefront of their minds it's easier to keep from getting strayed by the bells and whistles as you said. Some dealers you just need to stay away from though. When I was trying to get rid of my VW, one of the local VW dealers offered a buyback. So I stopped in after work one day to entertain their offer, with no real expectation it'd be worthwhile. Well they ran that place like a buy here pay here lot and long story short, I had to curse out the sales guy and his finance manger because they were holding my key hostage still after I demanded it back three times. They were so determined to get me into a new car and I just wasn't having it. Thankfully, my local Toyota dealer is pretty reputable. Told my sales guy to tell me when they start getting some 2020s on the lot so I can come in and check em out.

It's kind of like speed dating, if it doesn't look good or feel right then walk away plenty of other fish in the sea. I can't tell you how many times they have tried the let me go talk to my manager in the back deal and I just stand up and start walking. Sometimes it wakes them up, sometimes it does nothing. If it does nothing I keep on walking.

I remember that some dealerships wouldn't even let me test drive a pro because they didn't want to put miles on it. Why would I spend $4X,XXX on a truck without test driving it first? You work hard for your money and they should work hard for theirs. I'm not naive they are running a business over there but there is reasonable limits. Like I always say I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night haha.

I'll be stepping on-site at my local dealers this weekend after a month or two of email communication with local and out of state dealers. As of now, local dealers are firm on markup on an AG TRD Pro. I have 1 CA dealer quoting me MSRP, and 2 AZ dealers quoting me MSRP. I've got screenshots, saved emails, and will have pre-approval for financing from a credit union as ammunition to negotiate. It's only a $40 flight to CA or AZ, so if these local dealers don't work with me, I'm letting them know that I'll be booking a flight after I walk out of their doors.

If you want proof you're getting the best deal possible.
Figure that out,,, subtract more,,, then see if they let you walk away. That's the only way to be sure. LOL.
Heres a good one. A long time ago,, I gave them an offer they came back with no, I said whew, I was hoping you were going to say no, I have no business buying a new vehicle as I pointed to mine outside mentioning there is nothing wrong with it and should stick with that and save the money. He, the salsmen started to stutter and mumble. I love to negoitiate at dealerships. I read a book several years past about how to buy a car.

I'm sure you've done your homework but since Cali has stupid high prices on Pro's I started to look at all neighboring states. Not sure if it's a big deal for you or if it matters but if you drive that thing on California highways you're paying California tax and temp registration. Would think that Arizona would be better in that regard. Not sure how Nevada does it in terms of credit for tax already paid or if they want their cut too. I know there is other weird stuff like California considers anything with 7,500 or less miles "new" so the registration is different etc. They really try to make it hard for you to buy out of state because they don't want to miss out. Ended up buying my Pro in WA and having a few extra steps of enrolling it in the DMV as well. Have you looked at Dolan up in Reno? They usually have pretty good deals too.

I didn't really have any serious intention on buying from CA, just wanted to get a price quote as competition leverage. If local dealers don't budge, my next move was to book a flight to Phoenix. I actually haven't reached out to Reno, I'll do that today.

Wait can you elaborate on that? I've never bought a car out of state. Are you saying that if a non-CA resident buys a car in CA they pay CA sales tax rates? I thought they only paid their local tax rates at the time of registration.
