Great deal? 2016 TRD Tacoma in quicksand.

I had to quote this since I can only "like" it once. QFT!!!!! When someone tries selling you on a payment, run. If you're trying to sell yourself on a payment, stop, you need to rethink your approach.

This can't be stated enough.

They are like strippers. They pretend to like you and help you out because it 's easier to separate you from your money when you think they like you.

 

My daughter will be graduating college in 2020. She is not getting a vehicle that will cost her anything per month besides maint. items. I already have a used Ford Ranger picked out that cost 2500 dollars. I am going to buy it for her with cash, and she will use that to get to her job. Once she is settled in and knows that particular job will work out, then she can figure out what she wants to do from there.
But never, and I mean never, buy anything based on how much per month.

 

College or car debt. Choose one. If you're going to college, pour yourself into that. The truck will put you in a hole that will distract you from your studies to pay off, and then you'll be on here finding more ways to bury yourself.

Or...maybe college isn't for you. Why waste your time. Don't go to school. Buy the truck, get a job working at a truck customization shop and bling the F out of it. Learn how to customize trucks and then surf the wave of cash you'll be collecting from 3rd Gen cat murderers.

 

I made that mistake once. I was making good money for a young kid and bought a new truck. I thought I could afford the monthly payment so I shopped based on the monthly. Two years later I decided to get serious and go to college, with three years of payments remaining. Things are crazy unstable when youre in your early twenties. Some months I was scavenging the couch cushions for food, since all of my money was going to the monthly note. Some months the truck stayed in the garage until I could get caught up on payments. Going to class while fearing the repo is a tough lesson. I wouldnt do that again.

 

Not saying you couldn't make it work, but if the payments could be an issue it's in your best interest to wait. Also, this has 90k miles...don't know about you but I'm not buying my dream vehicle with 90k miles when in a few years you could have a new(er) one and a bigger down payment. Just my .02

 

Once you get to college you'll learn about how only stupid people take on large amounts of debt on assets that rapidly depreciate. and how having a car payment is only part of it. you also have insurance. and gas. and maintenance. and if you hang out here, all kinds of stupid ideas for "improving" your truck.

get a honda spree instead.

 

If you think having a new truck is going to get you tail at college think again boy. Save your pennies.

 

Dude. Never finance anything--except maybe absolutely necessary life-saving surgery you couldn't otherwise afford--if the best thing you can say is "I should be able to afford the payments." That's a really good way to start pile-driving yourself into a world of hurt.

And anyway, the only way I would even consider this is if you're going to school on a 100% full ride and you're not going to have a dime of student loans after school. Otherwise, please, do your future self a favor and hold off. Student loans fucking suck on a level that you truly cannot comprehend while you're still accumulating them. Once the direction of the money doubles back and you're paying that shit off, it's a kick in the dick. An extra $350 a month doesn't sound like a ton, but it suddenly becomes a lot more significant when that first job out of school doesn't pay quite what you expected and taxes are higher than you were thinking they'd be and you can't find an apartment as cheap as you thought you could and all the expenses you never had to deal with before start piling up.

Plus that deal's not awful, but... that deal can absolutely be beaten.

Sorry dude. I know you were looking for a chorus of "do it!" But as someone who spent his late twenties digging out of questionable financial decisions he made in his early twenties, just walk away.

 

Finances aside, I would stay clear. It’s only 10k miles away from the magic 100k mile odometer reading.

 

I can’t add anymore since it’s all been said already so I’ll just say this; Sounds to me like you’ve already made up your mind and want validation instead of sound advice. Be smart and resist the temptation. You’ll get your chance and then you’ll be glad that you waited when you do.

To be honest, it doesn’t sound like any once in a lifetime deal to me either. And the ‘16’s are the ones everyone is talking about when they come here to bitch about shifting issues.

There’s been enough advice on how to make your decision based on finances alone.

let’s switch gears and focus on the truck:

#1. 90k is a lot of miles. That’s 30k-ish per year.

#2. Based on mileage alone, maintenance from this point will cost more unless you are planning on doing it yourself. That $300-something a month easily turns into $400+ after you add all maintenance items

#3. Not fuel efficient for college ... basically goes back to cost of owning the vehicle

#4. Quicksand is ugly Lol I kid I kid

 

As a 16 owner I honestly would buy a 2nd gen with lower miles if given the chance. With 90K its probably ready for a full overhaul. That price is not that great either.

And oh yeah, someone has put 30k a year on that thing. Enjoy it.

go for it if that's what it takes to learn. and hey, maybe it's true that you'll get out of it what you put into it if you can't make some payments. or maybe not. you'll learn a ton either way.

I was in your situation 2 years ago, had 4k in savings, was able to get 0.9% apr loan through Toyota, and working as a 1099 doing IT stuff while going to school, so ended up getting an new sr5 with 3k down payment with a 0 apr for 18 months CC.

Work ended up picking up by a whole lot and I am doing very well now, but the sacrifice was school, ended up not doing well due to focusing on work for my vehicle/fun payments and I am still dealing with school, even slower now since my job keeps me very occupied but pays well.

I put effort yes, however luck played part in it too and not everyone is that lucky, so what I would recommend doing is getting a nice 05-06 tundra for $10k and call it a day until you are ready to upgrade in 2-3 years from now.
