I am wondering who changes their own oil and what filters do you put in? Any significant pros and cons? I am going to do some shopping (online too) to see if I can find some good prices. The point of changing myself is to save money and learn to do it myself (yea I should know by now). Any other recommendations would be nice. But for right now I’d like to know filters.

id suggest doing a search of the forum for this answer.....

EDIT - That stated, OEM Toyota filters have proven to be the best.

Toyota filters are actually the cheapest if you buy the packs of 6 on Amazon

    You have the 2.7
You could run that thing on molasses and get 500k miles out of it!

In all reality, a simple OEM filter and any specced oil will do just fine. I personally have run OEM filters and Walmart brand Supertech Synthetic for the last 400k miles or so in all of my Toyotas, and I’ve never had a single issue. A DIY oil change can be had for $25 or less with a quality OEM filter and quality synthetic oil.

Their Ultra line is excellent, there's several post of them being opened up on the internet. I run the longer 3600 version on mine.

One can never have too many light bars.
I make my own oil filters using sheeps wool, a soda can and a little duct tape. Still better than a Fram filter.

I don't know if its a regional thing, but the Toyota filter is a no brainer for me. Cheapest Walmart filter (brand name) is $6, Toyota is just over $4 with taxes, go figure, wish all maintenance oarts were like that...

Well most forums do have a “necro” policy that I don’t want to violate with pros and cons. I’m also not read up on “search function” here :)

Amazon had good prices on Toyota OEM filters.

You should do a write up for this, butught I suggest lining the wool with sheeps intestine, which should then allow you to reuse/recycle the can.
    :rofl::rofl::rofl:
Just in time for the holidats. You'd be famous...maybe you could patent this too, but if you do I wanty cut.

2.7 sucks to do at home, I would try it once then pay someone to do it thereafter.

4.0 I could do in a mall parking lot haha.

The Fram Ultra is considered by many experts on Bobistheoilguy site to be the best filter you can buy. I use them regularly. When it's time for an OC I buy either the Ultra or an M1....whichever one is on sale

Thanks guys. That makes me feel a lot better. Price shopping seems to be great. Oil chance shouldn’t be hard either. I got the place to do it now too (out of the nasty hot Florida sun). I’m happy to start working on it myself. It actually helps me learn cars better, which helps my job too (car insurance stuff).

I use the OEM - but then I'm changing oil in the 3.4, 4.0 and 4.7. Same filter. My friendly part counter guy helped me out a bit.
