I paid 31k for my 2016 with 10 miles. Thing long term... when this truck you buy hits 150,000 miles what will it be worth? 200,000 miles? 23k is wayyyyyyyy to much for anything with 90k on it.

And please tell me you are going to college for something useful like engineering. Please oh please don’t be going for something that requires a masters to make 40k upon graduation.

Well, somewhat similar situation. Cept I had tons of student loans. But I bought a brand new Jetta in school (multiple years left) for 23k. If you think you need a truck in school, you really don't. I just went to uhaul and rented a trailer anytime I needed something. (also towed waaaaaaaaaay more than rated, fckn love diesels, but that's another story)
The monthly payments were less buying new than the maintenance and gas costs for my used expedition bought a few years previous. (dad wanted me safe, then gas started becoming $6/gal lol)

Drove it for over 27k miles (only tracked that many on fuelly) over 3 years, and sold it for 20k. So lost about a grand a year.
You, want to get the least depreciating vehicle in existence... I say if you can DEFINITELY afford the payment and gas, then fine. But do the math and you might be better off with something that can tow a little and get better mpg. And then find a better deal.

I bought my Tacoma last year then started college. Got it paid off over summer, now I’m super broke and have to figure out tuition, but I’m luckily at a UC school with in state tuition. I don’t regret my purchase, but make sure you can handle payments or can work a job and take classes.

You're ahead, why set yourself back?
Get an eco box, and job. You don't want to wake up 5-10 years from now, and you're still renting a house/apartment, and paying on the same old worn out truck no one wants anymore. Trust us, time flies, this can and will happen to most.

I agree with this for your general life pursuit and not just because of the "Bird Gang" affiliation...but also, I'm of the ilk that if you're already going to invest that much and make payments on such a large number. You might as well invest in something with way less miles and pay a tad more for it. Payments from 25k-35k honestly don't vary all that much per month. Paying $40 more a month for something with 50k-70k less miles would be my pick. Just my 2 cents.

Why waste your breath, we all know he's buying the truck regardless of the overwhelming advice not to buy.

OP wishes he never made a thread asking for advice. He was probably already having dreams about driving around in his quicksand taco with the PRO grill, picking up all the chicas.

Like others have stated, if you already spending this much, get something newer with less miles for a bit more. You will be happier in the long run. Good luck man.

Do it! If not, you will be kicking yourself for the next few days while you still think about it.

Really? You think paying 23k for a ‘16 with 90k miles is a sound financial move? Especially for a kid who has already said he’s not sure about the payments?

OP, I hope you test drive the shit out of that thing - especially on the highway - cause if it’s a ‘16 you may not be real happy with the shift points. Trust me on that...

Most of the people talking shit about not taking loans are full of it or aren’t aware of a lot of people’s situations. If you don’t have cash and need a ride then a loan is you’re option and a shit ton of people are in this situation. As far as the truck, it doesn’t sound like a bad deal to me but I’m not one to pay that much money for something with that many miles. I would probably buy something that doesn’t have the ridiculous used vehicle asking price of a Tacoma and wait a while longer for my dream truck. But then again, we should all hope these things are good and reliable for a couple hundred thousand miles so maybe it’s not a horrible idea. I mean, it’s been 20 years or more since 100,000 miles was a milestone for a vehicle hitting its end of life usefulness

"Everyone has told me it’s a great idea because I can get my money out of it IF I ever need to get rid of it."

Famous last words. They don't give a shit because if you go Tango Uniform on the payments, they aren't holding the bag....you are.
I would walk and wouldn't look back. There will be a time for it down the road, when you truly can afford it and won't blink twice about buying it. If you are having to come to a forum for justification, the answer is already staring you in the face.
