Cool. Very similar to my experiences in snow as well. I miss having dedicated snow tyres, no where to store em these days.

I have the same tires, but got them studded and used them specifically as winters on my Silverado. They were perfect for Sask winters - big lugs to bust through drifts and deep snow, and the studs grabbed like crazy on the layers of ice we end up with around here. I picked up some 2nd gen alloys, got a set of qwik sensors, and had them mounted up last week - I'll bolt them on once the snow flies. This will be the first year for them on the Tacoma, I'm expecting the C load will make for a bit of a rougher ride.

Any tire, right or wrong, with an M+S rating is considered “winter approved”, at least in British Columbia. The “S” stands for “snow”, so saying it is not approved for winter is kinda ridiculous. It typically does not snow in the summer. When signs before mountain passes, in BC, say “winter tires mandatory”, all they are looking for is M+S, which is the all-season rating we are familiar with.

There is a lot of confusion (not helped by the signs which should say either/or) in regards to this, so our government have offered clarification. M+S is all you need, but personally I run dedicated winter tires, just not k02s, which I happily run the rest of the year.

I'm in NW Montana where we see a pretty solid mix of deep snow and ice. Last winter I switched from KO2's to studded 245/75/17 Nokian Hakka LT2's. Been impressed w/ traction and ride quality in all conditions. Far superior to the KO2 for the winter months. If I were doing it again I'd probably go 235 in the new LT3's.

Yup and anywhere else in the country/world they are not considered winter tyres. They are allowed because at least it's a better tyre then summer tyres which half the morons living in Vancouver and Vancouver Island use for tyres because they forget they live in a northern climate and if they didn't do that that portion of the population in BC would just drive with there summer rated tyres. Speaking from experience having lived there for 8 yrs, province has the worst winter drivers I have seen, might as well be Florida peeps driving in snow.

This is why the Coq's so dangerous to drive on in the winter months and they had a lovely tv show documenting the morons. That hwy is a joke and yes I have driven it a minimum of 1-2's a month for many many years typically in the winter as that is when I could get days off have also done it on a motorcycle in April and it snowed from Merritt all the way to hope, that sucked balls, granted I had non because they were I side from being so damn cold.

Regardless, they just have an more aggressive tread pattern they do not stay soft like three peak tyres and they slide on the icy roads. I'd rather have someone use them then a strict summer tyre though. But all seasons or M&S are a joke in the winter and akin to hockey pucks on ice.

Nokian are amazing tyres been debating a set of them on my truck this year. All depends on if I go down south again for the winter.

My only point is that they meet the minimum standard of the law. I don’t recommend them, nor was I trying to start some sort of race riot over British Columbians. Retarded drivers exist everywhere. Never been to a place where they weren’t the norm.

Funny this is exactly how those of us east of the Cascades think of Seattle drivers.

ill also point out that 90 percent of the vehicles that come through our shop during the winter months are pretty new with all those fancy traction and driver aid features and they have winter tires on.

Cant buy driver skill. doesn't matter how well equipped your car is, if you just simply don't know how to drive winter tires wont help you haha.

I’ve seen many people that winter tires have helped. Helped them get into worse situations that is! It should be a requirement that you pass a summer and winter road test to qualify for a drivers license.

Completely agree! I'd be happy if the speed lmits dropped 20kph in the winter on the highways.

Here in Vancouver, there needs to be 3 tests. Sunny, Rainy and Snowy. Driving here is getting dangerous, but I am sure that is common everywhere.

And I completely agree, snow tires do make people think they are invincible and getting into bigger trouble.

I think the biggest single risk area for snow driving is Northern Alberta, with all the fellas running their F350’s on 37” lo-profile mud terrains, rolling coal on those icy prairie roads. Just sayin. :p
