The engineers designed the fly-by-wire throttle and the transmission they way they did, you could bitch and whine and throw a little baby fit and demand that it work the way you want it to and be frustrated or drive it with an understanding of what the design parameters are.

i.e. Shut up and step on the gas.

Don't interpret that to mean you have to floor it at every stoplight. That's not even close to being true no matter how many people that claim it to be so, what it means is the fly by wire throttle is an input device and it set up differently than most others. The gas pedal needs to move further and with a little more urgency due to the "calibration" Move the gas pedal a small amount and/or lethargically and the performance will be lackluster to compound the injury the transmission will quickly shift thru the gears and you could be in 5th gear going 30 mph, which forces you to finally step on the gas enough to downshift and accelerate. Just step on the gas with some authority and everything changes, it's not a rocketship but it's actually pretty decent for a 4000 lb vehicle

I think this is why people bitch about the throttle/shifting. When they test drive a Tacoma it isn't theirs and they don't have a problem being heavy footed on a test drive. They drive it and it seems fine, obviously or why would they go ahead and buy one? As soon as they sign for their new vehicle they become chickenshit douche bags afraid that they will damage their precious baby if they rev it to hard or too soon.

I have a 2016 as delivered from the factory, it has never seen the inside of a service dept. No TSBs, no $800 tune software.

“”tHe TaCoMa Is So bAd.. dO I bUy oNe”

Literally no one gives a shit. If you want the truck, buy it. If you don’t. Then be on your marry way.

There is NO perfect vehicle. You’re NOT crazy. You’re Annoying.

And here’s the mandatory “Get a MT” from a guy who owns a ‘16.

Op, the 2020 will ride great no matter whether you get an AT or MT. All the shifting issues were from the earlier third gens. Take it on a nice long test drive and I’m sure you’ll fall in love. The only issues I had with my 2019 were with the seat position and I took care of that myself with front an rear risers. 2020 has power seats so that won’t even be a thing anymore.

Best way to really enjoy your truck is buy one, then come here and try to figure out what the hell everyone is bitching about cause yours won’t do any of the crap they’re whining about. They are great trucks. Enjoy...

This mid-sized taco is becoming my favorite vehicle i've ever owned!
I don't have any toys to tow or haul, but when i ask it to do any sort of hauling or towing, it works like a charm.
I have co-workers that own 1st gens & say they "can't kill them". Toyota definitely makes quality vehicles & i used to be a Honda guy. You get what you pay for for sure.
Plus their TONS of aftermarket parts/accessories that you can get.:spending:

I used to tell myself this when I drove stick too. But in reality, whenever I actually left enough following distance in traffic that I could keep rolling forward in first or second gear, all that would happen is a bunch of people would see the space and jump in front of me. :frusty:

Or, and this is just a thought, he needs to remove the log that is lodged in his ass. It's as if some people feel they have a gun to their head and they have to read every single post.

Every vehicle is fly by wire now. That doesn’t justify the hesitation, shift points, and erratic shifting and the lack of torque and the curve.

There are many factors including the Atkinson cycle. Toyota tried to offset that with the gear ratios.

If their wasn’t problems and issues with programming they wouldn’t release software updates. Just because your Tacoma isn’t or doesn’t seem effected, it doesn’t mean that others aren’t.

Personally I don’t care for the way the Tacoma shifts and drives. I bought it knowing what it was. I did have to take it in after my first cruise control because doing ~70mph it was bouncing between 4th and 5th gear on flat roads in Ohio. It wasn’t holding gears. Way worse than normal driving hat people tend to complain about. Simple ECU update fixed that problem.

I grew up in the late ‘70’s early ‘80’s driving stick. There’s a reason manual transmissions are going the way of the dinosaurs. They are a pain in the ass, and require dexterity and time to learn the skill.

That’s why you have a contingency of younger folks today that swear they are the greatest thing, because it has a “cool” factor, exclusivity, and skill set that many don’t posses anymore. Growing up in my day, if you were a male and couldn’t drive stick, you were gonna get made fun of - that was a given.

I spent the better part of my Saturday trying to teach my daughter to drive manual last week. I’m still trying to get the coffee stains out of my shirt.

Sure MT’s can be fun now and then, but I wouldn’t go back to stick for love or money. Nothing beats the convenience of an AT.

    Been there done that.

There absolutely was a shifting issue with the first 3’rd gens. It kept me from considering buying one for a long time because I had experienced it for myself through my buddy’s ‘16.

The thing that gets me is when the guys who have the issue insist they all do it. Not true. Take a ‘19 out to compare and you’ll see what I mean. I’d be pissed too I had to put up with that. What gets me is why anyone would buy one in the first place. That’s what test drives are for.

Also don't forget that everyone brings their problems to the forums to try and figure things out.

Even this forum as large as it is , is a very small percentage of Tacoma owners ... look at the numbers sold from 2016-19 ... its a staggering amount of trucks.
