    1000 and 2000 series blowouts I'm guessing?

It sounds like AMD won't be able to keep up the current rate of production of the 3000 series so waiting until Black Friday for one could be an issue. Something to follow anyways.

Cool, I don’t think the signal from my cable box is protected.

Damn it, that sale was too good to pass up, ordered a Ryzen 5 2600, no MoBo or anything right now because I paid bills last night and remodeling a house is expensive but it’s a start.

I'd double check on that cable box signal. I'd think they would make sure that's running something to prevent copyright infringement.

Depends on the box/company. Some will allow something like stereo unprotected, but surround sound will be. Same with video. Lesser quality is less likely to be protected.

For sure. The HDMI spec itself was partially created for simple on the fly encryption and preservation of encrypted material from hard media like Blu-Ray discs.

Yep, it seems as though they’re running HDCP, reportedly the HDMI splitter I have *may* allow me to record protected content, but that a very rough possibility.

Intel is done, when you can buy an amd chip for 200 that competes with a 500 dollar Intel chip its a no brainer. Makes me wonder if Intel is going to pull some magic out of their sleeves or just watch amd run the show.

They'll be happy with 90% share in the larger laptop market for now. Desktop processors are an also ran business for them even though their fanbase doesn't want to hear that. Intel makes over 90% of their cashflow off of the low power market (IE laptops) and the server market where they are still fairly competitive, though cracks are showing. AMD is able to cut costs and price way under Intel in the desktop market because they saw the push towards MCM (multi-chip module) designs coming. AMD built a processor that could leverage the cost effectiveness of that design without giving up the farm on IPC. Intel can't bring a true MCM design to the home market because the Core design wouldn't have enough bandwidth over it's QPI technology to keep up with a Zen based design.

The Intel roadmap shows a custom post-Core MCM design coming out in late 2021. That will be the Intel competitor for Zen. At that point it'll be a real battle unless Intel flops on building their design to match Zen 4/5. There is also the possibility of a post Zen chip, supposedly AMD is building a second design team to explore RISC-V and other alternative designs for Windows use.

I suppose you guys have heard this question as much as the rubbin' one. My old Toshiba laptop is dying. Screen problems, droppin' out of the net connection.....I could go on. Any suggestions for a replacement? I play old Microsoft Flight Simulator games & use it for banking. Might load some pipe bending & electrical software soon as well. Lookin' to spend no more than about $1500. Any thoughts are truly appreciated. :hattip:

What screen size and weight are you looking for? Do you use it mostly on your desk or do you need it to be truly mobile?

Really no preference there. No, doesn’t have to be light or portable as it won’t leave the house. Would kinda like backlit keyboard.

Here's my recommendation then. It's a gaming laptop technically but it doesn't have alot of corny bling on it. It'll be fast, play even modern games, has a good enough card for moderate design work, has a backlit keyboard, and there is a memory Express that has it in stock near you. The only drawback it has is 8 GB of memory which will be low for CAD work, but it can be upgraded for less than $100 and still be under budget.

Keep in mind my suggestion has a 120hz screen. If you get to play with one it makes a big difference in games with lots of movement.

So I guess just buy an external optical drive for the old programs & I'm done.

Yup. I'd do as you say though and play with a couple of machines. I do recommend buying from Memory Express over box stores. They're a dedicated computer store and Canadian owned.
