I don't get the exact sounds you get but I do get sort of like a crackling noise from the dash. Haven't figured it out yet. Only happens every once in a while.

I got told its normal. When I took my tacoma in about six months after buying it for the service I saw a new tacoma being delivered. My service advisor let me sit in it and I heard the same noise. Now I just turn my music up. Sucks if I am trying to talk to someone though.

Yes I was told it's normal also .....
But there are more than one sound being discussed here

    Sound #1
The AC compressor making a howl at acceleration or when shifting to pass.....this sound sounds like it's coming from the transmission but it's not .... Turning the AC switch off stops it 100%
    Sound #2
The "Darth Vader" pressure change that happens behind the radio and again on my truck only happens when the AC is on AND the blower is on the two lowest settings
    Sound #3
Is a combination of sound two and the blower motor very sightly increasing it's speed and when the howl from the compressor all hit at once with the radio off its the trifecta of "Something is wrong " noises

And I did sit in a brand new 2019 similar truck as mine but V6 and it did the same thing

I don't want to bash this neat little truck but it has lots of issues that my Ford's do not

I would like Toyota to at least admit the issue and have a definite fix before I let them just start throwing parts at my truck

Not normal because other members have had theirs fixed by Toyota by replacing parts. Also, some members are not having this issue apparently. I think it is frequently happening, but no normal. Must be a common problem with one or some of the parts.

    It’s a Toyota/Tacoma thing. My 2017 and 2006 Tacoma’s do it.

It's not normal. My 2005 4Runner didn't do it. My wife's 2016 4Runner doesn't do it. My friend's new 2019 Tacoma Off Road doesn't do it. My two loaner 3rd gen Tacos didn't do it.

    Fellow Taco Owners,

The high pitched noise when the AC is on is completely gone after the AC System was replaced. I have been driving it for 2 summers with no issues. And I live in a warm climate. I love my Tacoma now.

When you say the AC system what parts do you include ? .... Hopefully not the evaporator that was my biggest fear is anything behind the dash

And did you have the pressure change sound also or no

The first thing they did was replace the evaporator behind the dash. It didn't do anything. Waste of time. As far as AC parts, I would say everything under the hood which would include the compressor and other associated items.

I had my AC system replaced as well. The noise to completely gone. Toyota motor corp is aware of the problem but won't acknowledge it because then they would need to do a lot work to fix everyone's AC issues.

Ok my next question would be any chance of getting pictures of your AC compressor to compare to the old style
Assuming the 4cyl and V6 have the same compressor

I have a 17 OR 4x4 and my uncle has an 18 OR 4x4 (his has the premium pack) and neither make any odd noises. I have noticed with Toyota’s that they always let air in to the vents even when the switch is set to off which I’ve never owned another brand that did that. I can feel the air pushing through the vents the higher the speed when it’s set to off but regardless; no odd noises.

Some have had the issue fixed ....
I am waiting to see what the exact fix is without the generalization that the "whole system" has been replaced

I am to OCD to let them take the dash out and finger fuck the whole truck over
I may be called crazy or get a wired look from you guys but I hope there is a updated compressor and any updated parts I will just get them from Toyota and fix it myself when the actual issues are clear

To me it seems like the compressor is the issue whether it's undersized or just poor quality or the sun load sensor is somehow telling the compressor to pump longer than necessary

This forum puzzles me sometimes when a 3rd Gen has an issue it is kinda like it's taboo to get it totally out in the open for fear of being labeled a crybaby or the polar opposite happens that us third Gen drivers are supposed to accept that these trucks have issues and that is the norm

So in short the trucks are like good looking chicks .... You have to put up with their issues because they are good looking
