You sure about these numbers? Are you comparing 3rd Gen 6th gear to 2nd Gen 5th instead of 5th vs 5th on both?

A little excerpt from post #2 here shows some different numbers.

My numbers could be wrong, I used the internet for facts. Bad idea much of the time.

I looked up a 2015 Tacoma V6 and finally found the transmission ratio specs. I was definitely using the highest gear, 5th for the gen2 6th for the gen3. The number I found for 5th gear in the 2015 high gear was 0.85, an overdrive ratio.

I need to get to work, I'll dig into this again when I get home.

Youre comparing the 6AT to the 5MT. MTs are all geared much lower at the transmission.

Your comparing apples to oranges. I’m failing to see the point of your post.

The gearing of the 2nd gen and 3rd gen is pretty much the same except the 3rd gen gets an extra overdrive gear.

Also, for got to add... anyone in Salem, Portland, Hood river or anywhere in between that has 35's and 5.29's that would be cool with me checking out their rig? Would like to see the difference before I pull the trigger on this big ticket item/s.

    Thanks

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!

No triples yet, I’ve seen some dual cases on older rigs but nothing new yet. I’ll probably get a dual case but working on a YJ build that’s sucking up all my money.

im comparing effective gearing, combining the axle ratio with the high gear transmission ratio.

    apples to apples

    2nd gen axle ratio 3.73, trans ratio .72 = 2.68 overall

    3rd gen axle 3.90 trans .58 = 2.26 overall or effective gearing

Since I wouldn’t run stock tires, a change to 4.88 or 5.29 gears would be mandatory for me for a 3rd gen.

As a 2nd gener I see what you are trying to do. Clearly you have decided on 5.29s either way :)

Just made the 300 mile trek home from getting 5.29s put on. What a difference! Holds 6th under most conditions, didn’t downshift one between raleigh and DC, it even accelerates well in sixth. Very happy so far, all those cool down stops made the trip painful though. Same mpg as the trip down.

I joined the club today too. Wasn't a long ride home but so far very pleased, no more hunting for gear up the hills...just that has made me happy so far lol.

Has anyone had intermittent electrical issues after installing gears? Sometimes when I start my truck I will get an immediate "2wd to 4wd conversion failed". The first time it happened I had also gotten "abs" and "diff lock (flashing)". The additional warning lights only happen 1/5 of the time.

The only remedy I have found to temporarily fix it is to turn the truck off and back on until the lights go away. I'd really like some advice as 4wd doesn't work when this happens and winter is approaching fast.

I did have the work done by a highly regarded shop in my area. Not to say that can't make a mistake, but if it's some simple loose wires, I'd rather crawl under than take it back in.

Unknown. BUT if you read the manual about what is turned OFF when E-Lock is engaged the list sounds related to your problem.

Odd that I was just reading that section of the manual last night. My issue is different, I have no locker (Sport) and am considering adding an Air Locker..........how do those things react?? I'm guessing, it doesn't REALLY matter. ABS, TRACS, etc can still work with a locked diff..........

I bet they bumped something or a connector not fully seated. Calibration issue? I doubt it.
