The first try/attempt she didnt like it. It still had the .30 cal neck and I didnt have the band in the middle so she said it looked unfinished...So I had just enough acrylic for one more and what happens???? I get down to the end of almost getting done and ready to sand and the blank catches and explodes...So I had to work and get the first blank off the other one, which was a pain, then I messed up the internals of the "twist" pen and had to take that apart. I found out also I was down to 2 twist pen kits so I had to use another transmission to replace the one I had in the blank, since I pressed the transmission too far into the blank, the refill would stick out at full retraction...finally got every thing back together and epoxy'd in...:annoyed:

Finally going to pull the trigger on a dado blade. Anyone got any feedback on this one? For how much I’ll use it (hobby work only) I don’t see a need to go over $100, but should still be able to expect a quality cut.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The drill press is easier and faster. I do have the stuff to do it that way just prefer the drill press.

Good answer. I have both myself but have never tried to make a pen. In my mind centering the hole on the lathe would be more accurate than on a drill press. I'm sure either would work though.

Ill have to take a pic of the last acrylic pen blank that exploded...I think the cutter was a little dull on the carbide and i cant find the right allen wrench to loosen it. so I used the harbor freight tools, which I can usually get a good cut on it I just have to take little swipes off, but It was digging in so I chanced it and lost this time...well technically won in the end but lost one pen blank...

yeah! For woods they work decent and I finish a lot with sanding but acrylics are a different beast. Too cold they snap, too dull tool then snap, too much pressure on tool they snap...
