Holy cow! That’s more than I paid for my 17 off-road brand new! I mentioned to the wife that the 20’s come with a power driver’s seat and she asked me if I was going to trade my truck in, I said hell no I’ll just steal a drivers seat out of a 20 but seeing that sticker I might just change my mind.

They should do these off-road comparisons by making them all equal in cost. The as tested price of the gladiator is $61k! Take the other 3 to a reputable off road shop and give them the difference in cost (11k for the bison, 16k for the taco and ford) to spend on upgrading the trucks, then compare them side by side off road....

lol, that’s actually a pretty valid observation. It still wouldn’t factor in longevity and trouble free service though.

    Toyota FTW Still.

Who cares, I don’t buy a truck based on someone else’s priorities or marketing, I buy what fits my real world needs. This time Toyota got my dime but if They rest on their laurels it might go to someone else next time.

I stopped reading after "The Toyota enjoys a half inch more ground clearance than the Ford and Chevy, which, in turn, makes it more difficult to get in and out of."

Two instances, from 2004 and 2006. At the time, two trucks that are today ranked as very desirable in the used car market got trounced by competitors that are now known as automotive jokes.

    I'll recap:

First article: 6.0 Ford beats 5.9 cummins in 2004. One of the worst Diesel engines ever built ranks #1 while one of the most sought after trucks (even today) is 3rd out of 3.

2nd article: 2006 Ridgeline comes in first. Tacoma in 3rd.

Do we really need to discuss this shit anymore?

    Do seat covers count?
I like the Ranger and Colorado. But I trust Toyota more. The Gladiator was a cool concept they ruined, but Jeep disappeared in 2008 when they killed the 4.0 I6. One of the most iconic American motors in terms of low end power and reliability. I laugh at all of the articles that puts the Ridgeline in the mix too, unibody isn't a truck it is a Crossover with a bed.

This article seems researched and not from actual experience. I know because I've read and heard all these same comments before from press releases and shill youtube videos.

That said, the competition is catching up and with most of the competition having more creature comforts and bells and whistles the competition does tend to catch the eyes of the bike riding, subway riding city dweller that writes articles a little more.

Hum lets see Jeep the worst reliability Chevy engines with valve seats falling out of the head has anyone driven a Jeep or Chevy with a 6 speed automatic? I stopped at a Chevy dealers a sales guy came out as I walked around a Canyon I said "there is no way that thing would survive where I live"! Yes they have cussy seats, bells and whistles, trinkets and doodads but I hate to think what they would be like with 200+K on them.

Meh, first year models always have their fair share of issues. An early recall isn't necessarily an indicator of long term reliability. Tacomas had some of their own for the current gen....rear diff leaking, knee air bags, crank position sensors, etc.

Yep. My 2017 had a bad factory tune and it was bi-polar and aggravating to drive. My 2019 is great and a dream to drive.

I think these are silly comparisons. So arbitrary. Things like seat position...backseat room...clearance...these bother me exactly zero.

The best bargain is in the mid level segment like the OffRoad. There is nothing in the competition that comes close to that for mid-$30’s. I think it is amazing you can get such a versatile vehicle with a generous amount of tech and features for that price. And for just a couple of thousand in upgrades to be an awesome trail machine.

To focus on a $60K vehicle like the Gladiator...there are many things I would get before this one. A used Land Rover...might even be more reliable...
