Yes. Toyota is reportedly working on a new single platform to underpin both Tundra and Tacoma. Hybrids are reported to be part of the plan.

This would give Toyota a double whammy: (1) the manufacturing efficiencies that so far have eluded midsize pickups, and (2) car-like levels of fuel efficiency.

Of course for all of this to work, traditional pickup truck durability, capability and affordability need to remain part of the equation.

 

2021 is severely unlikely.

 

The new platform is supposed to come out first in 2021 under the all-new 2022 Tundra. It would then get rolled out to Tacoma when the full redesign comes due in 2024 as a 2025.

There are other threads on this exact same sketchy website. I wouldn’t give the site any more ad-revenue-generating clicks. To sum up the other threads: no credible sources confirm 2021 as the Tacoma Hybrid rollout year; when you vet this source and its unnamed author for credibility, you have your answer; and of course any post including hybrids requires the normal Pap smear of TW jokes and references to Priuses and wanting the 4.0L back and America and government and California and everything else.

 

That website seems sketchy to me.

I do wonder if they could adapt the hybrid Highlander's powertrain for use in the Tacoma, though. It might be tough to adapt a transverse FWD-based setup to longitudinal RWD.

 

Many would, especially for those using them as service vehicles and city fleet trucks and the like. I probably would have bought one. And some of the new hybrid/ICE offerings are only a $1,000 difference (RAV4).

 

depends on how much its decreased. If it can still tow over 5,000 lbs then it will work for me.

 

Tundra needs the V8 as an option.

 

That probably depends on how well the 5.0 f150 sells.

 

I'm sure it sells well enough for them. People on their side don't like the idea of turbo V6 in a hard working truck.

 

if they aren't working on a hybrid or electric truck i'm pretty sure they're just planning on going out of business.

 

I have no doubt they are working on electric/hybrid. Still would like gas V6 and V8 for Tundra as options.

 

I'm hoping to see a hybrid with the 3.5 still. That way we still have power (maybe even more) and fuel economy. And just imagine electric motors off road
