Hi. New here and live in SJ.
I recently noticed after a more careful reading of my manual, the following:
"You should drive in four-wheel drive for at least 10 miles (16 km) each month.
This will assure that the front-drive components are lubricated."

I got the truck back in Dec with ~55k miles on it. I've put ~6k miles on it. I have yet to drive it in four-wheel.

I am going to Hollister this Sunday, but it really isn't feasible for me to go there monthly.

Are there any dirt roads (or even dirt parking lots) closer that I can drive around for a few minutes in San Jose?

I picked up a Scion IM manual (basically a Corolla hatchback with a different rear suspension) in March. It was $14K with 22,000 miles. I'll break even on gas savings vs my truck (34mpg vs 16mpg) in 5 years. That includes all scheduled maintenance, cost of the car, insurance, interest on the loan etc.

My motorcycle gets 47mpg and can lane split but there's the whole aspect of getting hit by cars.

Scion IM is pretty much a corolla hatchback.

I have a three mile stretch of straight highway near my work. At the beginning when I pull out I put it in 4hi drive down the road then switch it out to 2hi when I slow down to take a turn down a side road. Seems sufficient.

The OM says, "For normal driving on dry and hard surface roads, use H2 position. Driving on dry and hard surface roads in H4 or L4 position may cause drive component oil leakage, seizure, or other problems resulting in an accident. Further, it may cause tire wear and increased fuel consumption."

... so I'm skeered to put it 4H on highway

What year Jetta? I have a 2013 GTI and have considered some tuning, but always ended up spending on the Taco.

Just started looking at it. Found one for 11k on CL. May have to look more into them, and I'm betting there are more mods available to it.

Lots of cars running around in 4wd (awd). You can get binding (maybe) in the tcase if you’re turning sharply and the spider gears in the diff can’t take up the slack. So I just point and shoot.

I wouldn’t do it in four low. Gas mileage would be terrible.

I have a 2005 GLI, I went with an APR tune when they had a sale last April, I think it was only 400 bucks. but 034 is more local and they’re super friendly guys. Added around 30-40 HP with no supporting mods required and you definitely feel it in the butt dyno immediately. Best bang for the buck honestly, I highly recommend!
Also just smogged the car last week with no issues if your worried about that at all.

This will definitely be my last time at Toyota Vacaville. Should have been last time, but I want them to fix the shit they broke last visit (bolts missing from skid plate, lower bumper loose after recall done). Dropped off at 930 for a 10a appt. Still sitting here at 145. They really don't care about customer service here.

I can only imagine spending thousands on the solar system and then come out to see the conduit smack-dab on the middle of my roof.

Yikes! I bought my Tacoma from that dealership but that's too far away for me to take it there for service. I've been pretty happy with Hansel in Petaluma for that. Good to know about Vacaville's quality of service.
