Better do due diligence than to rush the process only to have some hack job on the.....job.

Hey everyone, I just moved to San Marcos from Philadelphia.

I was wondering about title/registration requirements and if anyone has done this recently. I'm a little confused about the title since the info online (https://txdmv.gov/motorists/new-to-texas) says I don't have to title in texas.

I own my truck and will just need to get registration and tags. I have a valid PA title, do I need to change that over to TX? Do I have to pay tax on my truck?

    Thanks!

    1. Welcome to Texas! The Austin and San Antonio groups meet often - hope to see you out and about!
    2. You don’t have to re-title until you sell, and probably not even then. I moved back to TX from Washington state with a WA title, and there was no issue. You own it? You own it.
    3. You don’t have to pay taxes IF the state you purchased the vehicle in had a higher tax rate. Take your sales paperwork showing what taxes you paid on it with you when you go to register. That’s what I was told to do...and my first year’s registration in Texas was $6 because I paid so much more in WA taxes. That was 2001, though, so it might have changed.
    4. What you have 45 days to do, though, is get a TX driver’s license (if you aren’t active duty military). They are funny about that - they want their jury pool!

And on behalf of the Austin peeps and the Texas Toyota Coalition (it’s a thing, talk to Chad), we look forward to stalking your truck. Pics?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the breakdown! That helps a lot.
I was gifted my truck from my dad in FL when I lived there. I moved to PA almost 2 years ago and got a PA title, and now I'm in TX. I don't think I ever paid sales tax on it, so I'm assuming I will have to pay the $90 new resident tax. I'll look through my records and see if I have anything from FL though

When I moved to Philly I got jury duty twice, and I didn't even live there 2 years. Literally got it the 2nd time the day after 12 month since the 1st.
I hope the same thing doesn't happen here.

I believe it's 90 days now to get a license, at least that's what it says on the DMV site.

Duh, Internet. I forget that we have the sum total of all human knowledge at our fingertips which we use to look at boobies.

Yeah, they might be getting you on the tax. It’s an older truck, so hopefully it won’t be too bad.

What shenanigans are you getting up to in San Marcos? What brings you here? Work, school, or girl?

You also need TX insurance, and a TX inspection. For your DL you will need to prove your US citizenship? With a birth certificate, I think a US passport works too. New law that started earlier this year, unless you have a TX license already.

It's interesting that you have to get your vehicle inspected first here. In PA that is the last step of the process, you have to get DL first, then registration, then inspection. Inspection in PA takes 3+ hours and is one of the most thorough in the nation. My truck was also put in weight class 2 so I needed a different plate, sticker, and paid more for that.

Oh here's my build thread and a few pics of my truck https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tiffany-the-taco.374490/

I'm excited to have a place to actually work on my truck again, and not have to park on city streets. Philly definitely taught me how to parallel park though. The spaces in TX could fit 2 vehicles by Philly standards.

Go to tax accessor collector office with title, insurance and driver license and they will get you taken care of. You may need some other things, but take a look at the website for everything you need to bring. I lived in Spring City near Royersford up until 2015.

Get online and find the closest DL office, schedule and appointment online. Fastest way to get through the bs. This way you don’t need to hang out and wait.

As far as the inspection, get TX insurance first, go to nearly any shop for the inspection, then go to the tax office as @Texoma has stated, if you hit the right time, you will spend 1hr max there.

DL and REG are two different buildings (unless you live in Taylor then it is across the hall)
