The water pump has no issues and the motor is running flawless. I just replaced my coolant 3 weeks ago and both hoses, upper & lower. I had a small leak but it stopped after a few times of topping off the reservoir I think it was only air bubbles trying to escape. haven't had issues lately.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that...
So.... I drained mine for the first time and all I managed to get out was 2.1 gallons out of all three drains, radiator cap off. Level was good prior to draining. Any idea what i might have done wrong? I followed the Toyota service manual instructions.

Capacity is 10.1 quarts (for the V6); you took out 8.1. 2 are left in the heater core, hoses and nooks/crannies. To get some of that out, fill up the system with distilled water and bring the engine to normal operating temperature - this will open the thermostat and dilute the remaining coolant. Let the engine cool down a bit, then drain and fill with 5qts of concentrate coolant; top off with distilled water. This will give you the recommended 50/50 mix.

    Reading this thread.
    And followed.
Now my issue is when I fill my radiator and then my res.
    When my truck gets hot.
It over fills the res and coolant spills out from res.
    Why?

@Justintheegreat You probably need a new radiator cap. It's suppose to hold pressure at 16lbs; if the cap is not holding that pressure, the coolant will boil and head into the reservoir.

Ya, you may be correct, I/we drove both a Honda civic & a Toyota Corolla well over 200k with little maintenance,(not proud of that, but circumstances were such??) at somewhere over 200k both radiators rusted out, the cost of radiator replacement may have been less than the cost of changing the coolant, (I don't know) however they didn't bust in front of a repair shop or in the driveway. I now change at around 50k-75k. jmop

@Justintheegreat And you are not filling above the max line on the reservoir? That empty space above the max line allows for some spill-over from the radiator. A bad head gasket could do that also, by causing the coolant to boil over, but I'd think other symptoms like white smoke from the tail pipe would be obvious. If you did a flush recently, you could have bubbles in the system that need to be 'burped' out; if thermostat was replaced and the new one had a jiggle, was it placed at 12 o'clock position? I'm stumped beyond this.

Out of curiosity, does that include the amount in the overflow tank? Or just the block/radiator/hoses/heater core, etc.

Just bought an 05 Tundra 4.0 filled with green colored coolant. Not sure if safe to be used in these engines. And is this a one person job? Some instructions mention keeping engine at 2000rpms while massaging the coolant hoses for air, not sure how that's doable alone.

I drained the radiator and refilled it with Toyota SLL coolant, why did I only get 3 quarts out?

I ran it to operating temperature, turned on the heater full blast and drove it, burpt it too.

I let it cool down and checked the level and only added a little more.

I understand not all of it comes out. What gives?

The block also retains some, it also has drain plugs.

Based on how much you already put in, just check it in a day or so after driving around and top it off if need be.
