What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Does the wet spot smell horrible? Gear oil reeks of sulfur so its usually pretty easy to pinpoint a leak.

 

Kinda looks like condensation or whatever off the ac, but I could be looking at it wrong?

 

I noticed a smell a couple days ago after I got done driving. I’ve had a bunch if fluids replaced in the last month but hadn’t gotten this one done yet.

I got the transmission fluid replaced and it’s been driving great but started to howl a little bit when accelerating the last week or two.

It’s kind of a yellowish color and looks like it’s coming out of the seal.

 

So it looks like the sway bar bracket on the passenger side is wtf I’m
Looking at. +1 to potential ac condensation, too far from the front diff and clear above the steering rack. Other potential possibility is rear main seal but kinda tough to tell. Follow it upwards and take a pic.

 

I dunno, looks like it’s dried up in the middle too, as far as I know lubey fluids don’t do that very well.

 

The bracket looks fine to me. Those things are beefy af. And I’m asking manual hubs or add, not transmission.

 

Thinking back on my install, are the shock mount washers supposed to concave inwards or outwards? I put them so that they cup the bushings but I feel like I remember reading somewhere that they actually go the other way to allow the shock to move a little bit when you really flex out the rear. Prevents from snapping a shock shaft. Is this true?

 

I put them back on the way they were on my truck when I installed my suspension. You put them back on in reverse and it makes sense that when fully flexed your washers will be gouging the shock bushing housing that way.

 

So yours were reverse from how I have them? I must have flipped them at some point in the past an not realized when I did my suspension. Gonna have to switch them back.

 

Found out the problem. So unfortunately somehow I was sent the wrong coils and I've been run an 18" coils and I needed sixteens. For 3 years. Over 10 broken axles. So it twisted the diff output shaft tube. My entire diff got shifted up to the right towards the oil Pan. As you can see from the picture one of the tubes completely twisted but still maintained its integrity to where it wasn't Leaking. Don't know but hope this helps somebody else out in the future if they encounter this. Had to drop the diff again ffs. And those damn star bolts are easier to just cut and replace.

 

I'm sorry how does a longer coil contribute to broken axles??

 

Too much lift?

 

Doubt it. Plenty of people have too much lift.

If anything it's more likely having over 300hp has something to do with it. Not coil springs

I like how the front exo cage work is so close to the body panels. Must have been built by someone with experience building crawlers

 

Going to the Machine shop hope they aren’t cracked

 

With the coils maxed out and no room for collar adjustment the much higher ride height increases CV angles. Constantly. Its like driving around at near fool droop. My truck easily sits 2" + lower now and the CVs sit WAAAAAAY more into the cups. Unfortunately I'm putting the front diff in once again but because I replaced that wrapped bent axle tube. It was when the CV busted most likely it bound up rocking the entire diff upwards and right nearly into the oil pan and crushing one of my air locker lines. It is what it is. Glad it wasn't a bent frame from how I hit stuff

 

Noticed the headlights were starting to look murky so I polished them.

 

Got the much needed bottle opener installed, on the front to hide from piggy’s lol, fuse block with circuit breaker all wired up and mounted a fire extinguisher in the shell tucked up and out of the way. Even put a sticker just in case so a stranger can grab it fast if needed

 

Sounds like your spring rate was just too high then. But 16s are fine.
