Anybody know of a metal shop around the Summerville/Charleston area that has a metal lathe? I'm trying to drill out the center of an aluminum tube to tap it for threads for an air chuck. I cant for the life of me, keep the drill bit centered and I keep making whistles when I get down to the last drill bit because the bit wandered off-center. I rolled over my portable compressor and broke the handle. I wanna say that the center of the tube is 5/16" and I'm trying to bore it to somewhere in the ballpark of 1/2" to 17/32". I start out with a 11/32", step up to a 3/8" and long story short - I make whistle.

    https://www.viaircorp.com/portables/400p

I don't have a photo, so this link will have to do. The grey handle is what I destroyed. There's an aluminum tube in the middle that broke off at the threads so I bought some tubing that I need threads put in along with the appropriate tap. I'm rambling so I'll cut it short.

You are using a tap for NPT right? Also try a drill bit with a center drill tip. Also Pipe dope the liquid kind put it on the threads and let it cure for a while.

Yeah, I have a tap for NPT. I'm at work at the moment but its thread pitch matches to the brass air fitting that I removed from the end of the pipe. Looks something along the lines of:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-1...le-Industrial-Brass-Plug-HDB21700AV/100389502 this kind of, but metric fine thread.

I have a set of thread gauges and matched the pitch and ordered the appropriate tap/die from Brown Santa. Typically, when I'm tapping holes :spy:, I'm the one that put the hole there so to take a smaller hole and expand it to a wider hole, so many puns, it's a pain to keep my bit straight,.. oh God the puns. I hate it when I can't keep my bit straight. The Irwin chart that came with my tap set has a 60% and 75% thread engagement drill bit size recommendation, and if my memory serves me right, it recommends either a 1/2 or 17/32 bit for the size of tap. I have up to the 1/2 in one of those bit kits but I had to buy a few bits individually since I thought I needed to gradually step up. I looked specifically for the HSS bits but they didn't have all the sizes I was looking for so I believe I had to buy a Pilot Point in 7/16. That may be why my bits are wandering. I figured with a quick zip with a counter sink bit would help align that bit, but still making whistles since the wall thickness of the tube is getting pretty thin at that point. The bits I bought for the gradual step were 5/16, 7/16, 15/32, 1/2. I had a 3/8 bit and the 1/2 bit were to replace the bit I dulled out drilling holes in the truck frame. If I can find a 7/16 bit thats not in pilot point, I might give it another ol college try. I have about enough tube left to make about 3 handles so if I take it down to about 2 handles left of tubing, I'll throw in the towel. I had to special order the aluminum tube online, I couldn't find it on the shelves of any hardware store.
