My battery light came on today and there was a pretty bad noise under the hood. My alternator was smoking like a sob. I replaced it with a duralast re-man one from autozone today. All seems fine now, but should I keep my factory one and have it re-built at an electric motor shop? I'm worried about the quality of this new one and it would be great to have the oem one on hand just incase

    OME and worth every penny.
The Dura. has a lifetime warranty?

edit: Prob. a six of one, 1/2 dozen of the other type scenario at this point.

I haven’t bought an autozone alternator in several years, but alternators and starters from Autozone have let me down on several occasions. Worst was an 84 Camaro my roommate owned. Alternator stopped working every year like clock work. When the third one went out (warranty was honored) the parts guy told us it was going out because we were putting the wrong alternator in! We were putting in the alternator they were selling us! When in a pinch they get the job done.

How much does it cost to rebuild? Is it just replacing bearings and brushes?

i'm not sure. but I could at least find out, and if it's too much, then just turn in my old one for the core charge.

Your alternator is an excellent made unit , one of the expensive parts to replace but worth it

    HOWEVER!!!!!

I only get a year warranty.

My new rebuilt looks like it is on it's way out, should have bought the factory one. It's only a month.

My original lasted 110k on an 07. Not hard to change unless you are 75.
