Everyday before bed I pray for all prodigal sons like OP that have fallen into temptation and bought jeeps, chevys, rams and ford.

Welcome back son, back on track!

Ps: probably OP is older than me so welcome back sir! The son part is just like the verse.

LOL. That’s funny right there. Yes lesson learned. I was just one of those curious people who wanted to try out that diesel hype! In the end, the right choice for me and my daily use is by far the Tacoma.

I've got a few buddies that are techs at a local dealer, and of course they do some horse trading with other dealers, one of which is the local Chevy. A while back, This truck/topic came up, and they were saying the warranty nightmare jobs that have been performed, and their suspension was, folks will be dumping them before the warranty expires.

I can only imagine the repair costs post warranty. And I also feel sorry to those who break one of those fancy new dssv shocks after the warranty expires as well. On the Colorodo forums, members were saying they were like 800 a piece to replace. Yeah no thanks. Hard pass on that.

I almost bought a Silverado trail boss custom (the cheap trail boss) but couldn’t do it... it felt like cheating haha the huge cabin (compared to a Tacoma access cab) and the mean look off the trail boss seduced me but couldn’t get the price low enough so I got back to Tacoma and bought it.. I’m
Glad I went back. 3.5 v6 with 6MT beautiful setup.

I’ll give to GM, that trail boss is mean looking for sure but I don’t regret my decision dumping the ZR2. Only thing I will miss is random strangers running up to me at a gas station saying I’m ruining my truck because I put diesel in it.
Then the shock on there face when I tell them it’s a diesel. People can be entertaining that’s for sure.

A friend had the turbo fail on his ZR2 Duramax at about 20k miles. The tech told him it was fairly common. Has that issue been resolved, and / or was the tech exaggerating? Seems like a great little truck, but of course im partial to the Tacoma as I've had a few over the years.

That may have been an exaggeration. I never had any issues with the turbo in the 30,000 miles I put on it. However, the emissions is another story. Numerous failed DPF, sensors go out, forced regens because the truck couldn’t complete it on its own. Chevy response is take it on the highway for 30 Minutes to let it run its course. Living in a city like most of us do, it’s not an adequate set up. Now if it was deleted, that’s a whole different story. But in the wonderful state of California where you get fined for farting, deleting wasn’t an option. Still had to smog it to which is another sore topic for me. EPA puts all these clean restrictions on for the new diesels and still had to follow smog regulations. Brilliant. Rant complete lol

I feel you on the emissions. My last experience with a diesel (personal vehicle at least) was a 7.3 Powerstroke, about 15 years ago. Great truck and I never had an issue with over 100k on the clock. Those days are long gone. I've had a handful of diesels since (Company trucks) and they seem to need consistent and expensive maintenance, all related to the increased emission standards. Unless your doing a lot of heavy towing, you can't beat a gasser. Add a turbo, and even better. Hint, hint, Toyota...

100 percent agree. I wasn’t towing anything and the V6 works best for me in my daily life here in Sacramento. Plus the V6 would run away and hide from the ZR2 diesel in a race. So much more power with the Tacoma. Now off road though, the edge has to go to the diesel for the low end torque. It was an absolute beast off road but again the Tacoma would be right behind on it on any trail. And I wouldn't worry about the Tacoma getting me home. ZR2 on the other hand.......

Coming from a 2018 ZR2, The only two things I liked better than the Tacoma was the DSSV Shocks and the engine/tranny combo. The shocks had better performance on and off road, and the Engine/tranny combo was just a hell of a lot more polished and refined. Never felt like it was searching/hunting like I experience now. I still managed to get 18 MPG in the ZR2 which is what I'm getting in my Taco.

Agree. The shocks were pretty epic. However, an nice icon set up on a Tacoma would put the ZR2 to shame imo. Plus it’s not going to cost you 800 dollars per shock to replace if you break them.
Engine/tranny combo yes I would have to agree they had it dialed in better than Toyota. However, I don’t mind the Tacoma’s at all. Just my opinion. Gas mileage though in the ZR2 highway I did see a few times 28-30 (coasting down the mountains from Reno lol) average though 21-24 which isn’t bad. If I could have deleted it here in CA, I may have kept it longer. However I was tired of the emissions failure I kept getting. Easy choice for me was to trade. No regrets.
