hello everybody! i am tackling a suspension change very soon. i have decided to go with bil 5100's. i would like a little height, maybe an inch or soo, but most important, i would like to even out the truck.
I live in the north east so rust is a big problem with my truck. (i am going to start using fluid film) During inspection i noticed i can peel the coating off my springs and seeing rust. my question is, when i have the springs off, can i just paint them with rust coating? Should i just replace them? if i do replace them, do i get regular springs, or do i have to get lift springs like 887 or something like that. are new springs powder-coated?
i also notice the top mount rubber is cracking. will this be an issue? should i replace that as well? thank for any info you can provide!

Yep I'd just pick up whole new coil assemblies. There are multiple vendors on here that can help you out. I recommend headstrong offroad or wheelers offroad. Both offer multiple options of assembled coils with the bilstien 5100's for cheap.

I can't speak to the ruff country UCA's although they do look like they would fit the bill as better than factory as they have grease able bushings as well as the ball joint. What most run on here seem to be SPC's or Camburg UCA's. And what I have also found is that you can get the older style SPC's from Rock Auto for about 200+ under the Mevotec name. Just some food for thought I think when I get around to it I will be going that route with mine. Good luck.

Not sure if you would willing too but you could find a takeoff 3rd gen coil overs. They would give you the lift you are looking for. There may even be stock UCA's for sale with them.
I have 2016 coil overs with a small spacer and like it just fine. I don't offroad and they didn't break the bank.

When you get the uca off I take care of that rust area in the vicinity of your uca. I use Ospho rust neutralizer, primer, Eastwood black chassis paint and Amsoil heavy duty metal protector. I find that fluid film washes away too easily. This is my regime that works for me after many years of trail and error. I would also recommend Eastwood internal frame protector.

I'd replace them. Better start soaking all of those nuts/bolts in PB Blaster as they are probably going to be a PITA to remove.

Thanks for all that info! i plan on keeping the truck so i am cleaning the rust for sure. i was going to ask about rust prevention and things like that, but after all my research, nothing gave me as good solid advice as yours.

How do you feel about clear coat? is that a lost cause???
and is there any valuable guide to clearing rust from hard to reach places?
    thank you!

clear coat on what? I would use that Ospho rust neutralizer in a small spray can for those hard to reach areas like inside the frame. The Eastwood internal frame protector has a " FAN" type nozzle with a hose attachment that you insert into the frame drainage holes for 360 coverage. I would take your time preparation is 99% of the work for good adhesion. I found out that after 7 years, I'm doing less touch up in the Spring. My .02
