Black Horse Roll Bar Question

Hey Taco peeps. This is my first thread... hope it's in the right area. One week ago I bought a '19 TRD Off Road, and I just got in my first accessory... a Black Horse Roll Bar (link). Not something I really wanted but I need either a roll bar or headache rack to tie my goats to. That's not a joke BTW.

Anyway, the assembly/install instructions are worthless but I think I kind of figured out how to mount it to the bed. It seems it locks into place on the bed rail system. The only problem is, if I'm understanding how this works, the T-bolts are too short.

Does anyone here have this or another roll bar from Black Horse? Looks like a couple of you do but I couldn't find an answer.

Help.

 

I didn’t use any of their hardware unfortunately. I had the hardware leftover from my N-Fab bar which was a longer bolt like you see for the rail system.

The second part I used was longer bolts to screw into the bed rail mounts. If you line the bar up correctly the back bolts hit the rail mounts perfect. I had leftover bolts that happened to be exactly long enough to work.

 

I would think a t-nut in the rail along with a bolt of proper length might work.

Or try a 'net search for "tacoma bed rail t-nuts" and see what ya find.

 

Excellent. Thanks for the replies. Drifter001, those T nuts look like they would work perfectly. I'm going to see what else I can dig up online.
Just weird that their included hardware doesn't work.

 

FYI, Walmart had the proper 7/8" wide T-nuts that fit in the notches in the bed rail slots here.



That, and you can get some proper sized stainless button head screws from your local Ace.

Haha, yep it's either climb up on the cab or jump out of the bed (hopefully not while the truck is moving). Thanks for the tip on the T-nuts from Walmart. I think I threw away some just like that, which were for my mill table, but I never used them. :-/ This is why people hoard stuff.

 

Are those t-nuts fully threaded all the way through?

 

No, they are not. The thread stops 1/16" from the end. So you need proper sized screws/bolts.

 

Yea, i made that mistake once. They make fully threaded t-nuts so you don’t have to be as precise. Search for TE-CO 41405T.

You might try some stainless hex bolts from ace, HD, or Lowe’s as they may fit into the rails as well. I know it can be done with F tracks for hurricane shutters and 1/4-20 bolts.

Got it installed, mostly. I still have to wire the brake light. I'm not sure if I'm going to do it the "easy" way as described in a YouTube video (where the wires are exposed between the bars and the cab) or if I'll attempt to pass the wires through the bar and the bed. Maybe I'll bring it to someone who knows what their doing.

The T-nuts I got off Amazon worked well but they were a little too long to secure into the notches in the rail system, which is a shame because the rear bolt lined up perfectly to the notch. I really cinched it down though, and I can't imagine the roll bar moving in the track. Still, I think I'm going to brainstorm a little more. That little bit of added security is appealing.

Assembly and install was easy overall and I think I'm happy with the look. Thoughts? (Sorry for the crappy pics. Hopefully you can see it well enough)

 

My one minor niggle is that the bars are just a hair too big for the to edge of the bed rail. Really, it's the overhang of the bracket that bugs me a little, but I think I can live with it. It's flush on the outside, which is where it
really counts...

I really like it. I think roll bars look good on extended cabs. I’m still debating on double cabs (which I have).
