It's a resonator, has to do with sound and airflow. Do you want to remove it or something?

Yes, the air flow coming through the intake is constantly being cutoff when the valves close. The momentum of the air hitting the closed valves causes it to compress then bounce back as a wave. The resonator evens these pressure waves out a bit and reduces noise. It's debatable whether removing it helps or hurts performance, but it will probably increase the sound.

This is similar to a water hammer which you may have heard in a house with old plumbing when a water valve is turned off and you get banging in the pipes from the momentum of the water having nowhere to go, so the pipes vibrate.

Manufacturers are not in the habit of installing things that are not necessary... if they can save 1/4 of a penny by removing something, they will.

I removed mine years ago. It collected heat from the OEM header. To plug the hole in the intake tube, I used the cap from a garlic seasoning jar and a hose clamp.
Later, I made my own CAI with parts from NAPA.

    OP,
I have one piece remaining to make this work for you. It’s the PVC section between the throttle body and MAS. If you want it, PM me and I’ll send it along with details of what I did.

Do you have problems bogging out? My mechanic said that if I were to take that box off it I should just cold air it because without that box and it still being a stock CAI I’ll have bogging out problems

No bogging out at all... the motor wants the cold(er) air. Mind you, there are no HP or fuel mileage gains but you will notice a more responsive throttle.

Well how much would you want for your custom CAI because I’m 16 and just had a check engine for an o2 sensor

Here is what I used for my custom made CAI.

Not sure if it comes with the hose clamps but you'll need 2. Add this to the part I'll send you and you'll be good to go.
I'll go get some pics now.

The mass airflow sensor is what is close to the air box. The throttle body is on the driver side of the motor.

OK, so here are some photos. Correction, you'll nee 4 clamps.
In this 1st pic, you see the NAPA piece or Auto Zone unit.

    Pic 1.jpg
In this 2nd pic, you see the PVC piece. Note the small rubber hose just left of the hose clamp on the RT. Drill a 1/4" hole into the tube and stuff the hose into it. It will swell and make up the difference and stay tight and leak free.
    Pic 2.jpg
And here you see from the driver side, the PVC piece. Notice the rubber line in the PVC piece. This line is typically ran from the side of the air box (which I have plugged) and across the top of the radiator. I did this to clean up the plumbing a bit. There is a brass barb threaded into the PVC which the hose slides on to.

If you need more photos, give me a yell.

I had a CAI on my pickup when I purchased it. Had to source an OEM intake. Got one from a 4 runner and it didn't have that box. I just used a PVC pipe plug to fill the hole. Been running it that way for years. Someone told me at one time it was meant to also collect water so it doesn't go into your intake. Not sure if that's true but - no issues without running it. Just a noisier intake.
