Well Coe sang the most famous version of it, but the main song was written by Steve Goodman (who wrote City of New Orleans), and the above verses by John Prine. I saw John sing it in concert last year.

About David Allen Coe...maybe you've heard of the infamous "prison album"? A professor of mine actually gave me a copy--a real guilty pleasure in every way imaginable, with the emphasis on guilty. When I had kids I actually destroyed the cassette so they would never listen to it while going through their dad's music collection.

 

Which one was that, dare I ask..

 

Uh I've said all I'm going to say, just google Coe prison album (or Underground Collection) for the details. I can't even quote the song titles on here without getting into trouble.

For those of you who don't know, Raceway Park is a legendary drag strip and motorsports park in Englishtown, New Jersey. I went to Raceway Park for the very first time in September 2014, for the US Diesel Truckin' Nationals. I made a tradition of going every year for the annual spring and fall swap meets. Seeing as it's only a little over an hour from my house, it's totally worth it to go. I also went to the diesel truck show in 2015 and 2016. I did not go in 2017 because I was at Keystone Madness, which is a huge van show they hold every year at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds here in Pennsylvania.

Anyway, Raceway Park was recently inherited by the newest generations, and their biggest focus is on making money. Whose isn't?!?! So, a salvage auto auction conglomerate offered them a ridiculous sum of money to lease the property and it is now the beginning of the end...

 

All of these photos were taken on September 28th, 2019. When I went to the swap meet in April 2019, this space was still being used for the swap meet. Now, it's pretty much bulldozed...

 

I ended up parking my Tacoma somewhere out that way...

 

The drag strip has not been operational since 2017. That temporary building now cuts the strip in half...

 

Here we see the concession stand, famous for its sausage sandwiches, with the bulldozed barren wasteland to the left...

 

At every swap meet, they use the drag strip for car shows (only on Saturdays and Sundays; no show on Fridays)...

Where a swap meet once thrived, there is now a vast expanse of nothingness...
