Only thing you gotta remove is the kick panel then some blind pictures with the flash on on your phone.

BTW, I got a pic of mine by removing the glovebox bin instead of the kick panel. Pick whichever one is easiest for you.

I’ve never seen a scan tool produce the ECU part number. Of the ones I’ve used (to include Techstream) they report the calibration id number.

Have you guys seen the actual part number reported by a scanner?

Ours does, you can pull the part number off the ecu through CAN

    examples

    Calibration file: 89663-0CJ64 89665-0C700

    Calibration: 30CJ6401 50C70001

    Part Number: 89661-0CM34

    Calibration: 30CM5101 50CA5001
    Calibration file: 89663-0CM51 89665-0CA50
    Hardware: USK5###3URFBE
    Part Number: 89661-0CQ21

However, it's possible to load any file to matching year of ECU, so I'd say you don't "have" to use the same part number. It's possible to make ECU Clones from any part number (matching the build years, like 09-12, etc)

    Neat!

Only reason i say same part number ECU is due to 1. being able to get the truck up and running without any special stuff. 2. you can have multiple ECU's for your truck and only need one set of HPT license.

Are you saying we only need 4 credits but can flash two ECUs if they have the same part numbers? I thought you had to buy 4 more credits for a new ECU

The way HPTuners licenses the truck is via ecu part number, and vin number. If you get the same part number ecu and re-write the vin to match the vin of your truck (easily done in techstream) the software knows no difference.

I am not saying this to circumvent HPT's licensing setup, just letting yall know that it can be done, you have paid to license your truck for tuning, would suck to have to pay again to tune the same truck due to a bricked ECU.

This is solid advice, though ECU pricing varies widely between MYs and options (e.g., MT vs AT). Because flashing options were so limited when I installed my S/C and Toyota previously flashed my ECU to install T-SB-0044-14 (Spark Knock Noise), changing its P/N from 89661-04G80 to 89661-04G81, their system would not write the TRD tune to it. I had to source a "virgin" (89661-04G80) ECU, which cost me about $300 dollars, used. (IIRC, new ones go for about $600.) Sadly, I sold my TSB-flashed ECU long before our current ability to re-flash them existed. Unless someone knows what other ECUs can be substituted for 89661-04G80, the best deal currently available for the spare I need appears to be $240 for a used one on eBay.

    Good info. Thanks!

Yeah MT's are going to be more expensive for sure, i got my 2013/2014 89661-04G60 (for my auto trans) for 80 bucks. Not sure how things would work if you sent in a different part number for OVTune to flash a different cal onto. Ecu connectors changed I want to say in 09, might of been 11.

HPTuner said it's by Calibration ID and VIN.
The part number can be the same on an ECU between 3 different Calibration IDs. (N/A, N/A update, TRD)

There are differences between those years, but there's nothing "unique" about the 2015 ECUs

Ah yes, thats right. I knew it was something along those lines. Getting a same part number ecu likely means same CAL ID

Thanks. I should probably just write some Linux-ware for reading and writing ECUs. I've got what should be sufficient hardware (Galletto 1260 clone, Macchina M2, VCI clone, etc..), I just haven't done anything with the newer generation ECUs and would hate to brick my daily. The last one I tuned from scratch involved physically pulling the EEPROM chip out of the ECU, reading/writing that, and cramming it back in.

Are there docs somewhere about the CAN commands to read/write the calibration tables?

Reading the calibration off these ECUs isn't possible over CAN. Writing them requires knowing the seed algorithm and communication methods and checksum correction, and appropriate CANbus communication.
