Tailgate Weight Limit

Been wanting to load a Golf Cart into the bed of my 2017 Tacoma.
Have strong enough ramps but wondering if the tailgate can take the weight of loading and the rear wheels of the Golf Cart sitting on it.
Anyone have any insight ?

I sit my 4wheeler on the tailgate and have driven 2.5 hours nad not a single problem.

 

I tried to link 3rd gen tailgate threads but failed....

 

I'd look into a reinfocement plate/cap. The gate is similar in construction to the hood but hollow with a fiberglass panel. You can sit or stand on it but having a load bounce on it while driving probably not a good idea.

 

Do you have any idea how much weight the Tailgate can support ?
I’ve seen a bunch if images with 3 Motorcycles in the bed.
You think loading a Golf Cart would be overdoing it ?

Looked it up online and the Golf Cart weighs nearly 1,000 since its electric.
6 Decent size batteries in it

 

I'd think approx 500 lbs bouncing on the tailgate is a bad idea.
I'd just borrow/buy/rent/steal/build a small utility trailer. Plus it'll be so much easier to load and haul with it being low and behind the truck.

 

I would think that 1000 lb would be pushing it.

I never really saw specs for the weight limit for the Tacoma's tailgate.

With my previous truck I think it was around 200 lbs and some people would say that it didn't take into account the cables providing additional support. And I would guess the Tacoma's is about the same.

Some people try to distribute the weight by laying down plywood across the bed and tailgate. If you have to haul it in your bed I would recommend doing that. But would recommend just using a trailer more for this type of case. Because how easy would it be to get it up into your bed and securing it? I think a trailer would be easier for this.

 

I think your right, also there’s more weight in the rear wheels than the front due to the location of the batteries.
Was thinking about running a couple of pieces of 2-3” angle iron the length of the bed out to the tailgate and driving it up the ramps onto that. IDK,

Back it in. Put the majority of the weight on the center of the truck

Or park it on the ramps in the bed to distribute the weight better

 

^^^This. You could also jack it up in the bed, just in front of the tailgate, and use some 4”x4”s or 6”x6”s like jack-stands under the frame of the golf cart so all the weight rests in the bed.

 

I was wondering a similar thing... Toyota does not give a specific limit for tailgates. Not specific to Tacomas but the info is thought through

Would a 1000 pound golf cart exceed payload capacity considering adding in the weight of the driver and passengers? Seems like a small trailer would be the proper way to transport it.

 

Of all the threads about dirt bikes, four wheelers and motorcycles on the tailgate, this is the first one where I'd have to say no.
With the golf cart batteries mounted rear of center, you're probably talking 600lbs on the gate. I'd also expect the added kinetic energy of both the truck and cart suspension bouncing around would further stress the mess..

 

Does the 3rd Gen. have the plastic inner tailgate skin like the 2nd gen did? If so, Mobtown tailgate skin...
